In this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEmFREUXxdI&feature=youtube_gdata_player the presenter states how the sonic maximizer "aligns the arrival" of sounds from the woofer, mid, and tweeter to your ears.

Everywhere else I've read about these - including BBE's own manuals for the 382 and 882 - is to just set them where the sound becomes solid and clear without becoming shrill or muddy! So my questions are:

#1. Where did the youtube presenter get his facts from - and are they legit?

#2. I'm building a modest PA system: Do I really need a maximizer?

BTW for those wanting to skip ahead to the Sonic Maximizer it's at 6:50 into the video!

#2. Depends on how good your PA is.

I tried 2 or 3 of them many years ago and while they were good at brightening
analog cassette and early samples that were low res due to lack of memory, I
haven't used them in years.

If your PA is deficient in HF, they MAY help, but you can easily lean too
hard on any device like this and not know it.

They are junk and a waste of money. But their ad copy is very impressive.

** Took a leaf out of the Bose bible, I expect.

BTW:

Clamp your nose with your thumb and forefinger and say aloud:

" No highs, no lows - must be Bose "

No.

How would the maximizer know your crossover freqs ?

Delay BS. They add treble in a dynamic way, depending on how much midrange
you have. Mostly good for poorer tape playback.

I can't answer as to the youtube presenter as well, but I've not found them to be that much of a benefit for a sound
reinforcement system. yOu can do as well or better by the
proper choice of microphone, its placement to capture the
source, and system tuning.

I think most folks who end up depending on them over use
them, and oftentimes, to my ears the sound could best be
described as shrill. I've been saddled with one while using somebody else's system, and oftentimes for me the
appropriate setting was bypass.

I didn't start this thread to have it turn into a hatchet toss! I just want some confirmation or concensus regarding maximizers. Thanks.

The guy in this video has the concept of the Sonic Maximizer wrong. The
concept is not time aligning physical offset of speakers. A decent
crossover/processor can do this. The idea behind the Sonic Maximizer is
that as a signal passes through the circuitry of an EQ (especially a
graphic EQ), portions of the signal are delayed more than others. The
BBE allegedly re-aligns phase of the signal. In practice, this is very
unlikely to be true.

The BBE does color the sound, adding deep bottom & high frequencies.
Decades ago, I have used them. Sometimes I liked what they did, but I
never liked them enough to actually spend money on one. I liked using
them inserted on percussion or brass/woodwind sub-mixes. With lessor
sound systems, they added brightness to cut through a muddy sound system.

If you have a decent sound system & decent mics, I wouldn't waste money
on a Sonic Maximizer. But, you might feel differently. I suggest you
borrow one, try it out, then decide if you want to spend your hard
earned cash.

Don't feel guilty. This is an average Phil response to any post. It is
how he humors himself.

Actually, Phil is quite intelligent. When he takes his meds, he can
offer some excellent advice. But he seems to choose otherwise. In any
case, his posts have entertainment value.
