I suggest that you try using Chrome or Opera until it gets sorted out.
On a slightly different but still off topic note, I tried out the new
Chromium OS on my notebook. Still obviously in beta, but dreadfully slow
and totally useless if you have no internet connection.
Ron
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx
If it runs, try to remove or disable the the flashplayer
and go from there.
You could also download a alternate browser such as opera on another
machine, install with no plugins, and use that until you resolve the issue.
bob
I was searching the web to try and resolve my issue with video
files, recently. I saw many complaints about the newest version
of Flash causing browser crashes and such.
While on that topic, I appreciate all who tried to help with the
problem I'm having. Fact is, I have already tried every solution
suggested. Such as malware scan, virus scan, installing newer
version of Flash, you name it. I wouldn't look for help without
trying every possible solution, first. I keep a clean house on my
PC. Even got rid of Norton antivirus because of it's hogging of
resources. Switched to AVG.
Back to phildo..
Since you cannot DL a browser due to all your browsers
crashing, is it possible to install one if somebody emailed a zip
file to you? Just throwing this out there. Maybe someone can
advise if it's do-able.
Have you tried re-booting in safe mode? I would uninstall that
Flash player, then try safe mode as a way to get a browser to
remain stable.
All just guesses, here. I'm just a fader jockey ;-)

Often when IE crashes, it is due to a defective add-in.
You can control IE add-ons several ways.
*** To temporarily disable all add-ons :
In Windows, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System
Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
You can also start Internet Explorer with out add-ons by right-clicking the
Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and then clicking Start Without
Add-ons.
*** To permanently disable add-ons:
You can access the Manage Add Ons menu without starting Internet Explorer
using the Internet Options icon in the Control Panel.
In the Show list, click Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer to
display all add-ons.
Click the add-on you want to disable, and then click Disable. Repeat for
every add-on you want to disable. When you are finished, click OK
This is probably not a direct fix for your problem however I find that
Eusing registry cleaner helps me keep windows running
http://download.cnet.com/Eusing-Free-Registry-Cleaner/3000-2094_4-10521691.html
also ccleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
both are freeware
I use CCleaner to keep my computers clean and lemony fresh.
Ron
I read reviews of Eusing, and someone claimed it isn't free.
I have tried a few of those registry utilities and they seem more
like bloatware than a useful tool. Many seem to allow a scan
and provide a report of errors and such, then you have to pay
to unlock the 'fix'.

Steve <snip> McQ
CCleaner is free and works well. It not only removed unwanted registry
entries, it cleans out temporary and unwanted files, removes bogey
start-up entries and uninstalls no longer needed programs.
There are no catches.
Ron
What part of "free registry cleaner" did the reviewer fail to understand?
It gives you the opportunity to register (and donate to the cause) each
startup, but that's not nagware in my opinion.

The same company that makes ccleaner makes a great free defrag prog
http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
Yeah sounds like he googled and just did the sponsored listings :-)
Ccleaner used to be called Crap Cleaner, it works well. I used it till
recently...
Have switched to IOBIT using the security instead of AVG and the System care
instead of Ccleaner.
Free versions worked so well I ponied up the 20 each for the real ones.
YMMV and all that.
Damned if I know. I browsed some reviews, and one person claimed there
was a $15 fee.

Steve <snip> McQ
Ummmm, no. I looked at a couple of pages in the Google
results. Plus, the links provided by Tim (cnet, filehippo)
Would sponsored listings include negative reviews?

Dump the PC, get a Mac. You don't have to usually worry about such
nonsense, and certainly not malware related issues. If you need
Windows for certain apps, you can run a virtual machine software like
Parallels or VMWare within the Mac OS. This is what I do to control my
processors which have Win. based desktop control apps. If I need full
Win native operation, I can run BootCamp. So far I've never had to use
BootCamp though I do have it setup. Interestingly, Mac laptops run
native Windows faster than most PC laptops. Go figure.
K.
It was a joke Steve. I can relate to the problem, I had the same issue with
registry cleaners a couple years ago...they all wanted money to do anything.
But there are good free ones.
Ccleaner, IOBIT, and regseeker are three I found...and those only after
really digging...
Actually not that hard to believe...Apple has total control over the
hardware and firmware....not true with any one company in the PC world.
Um, yeah. I've tried a few and as I said earlier, they give a free
scan but repairs require payment/upgrade. Some were more of a
load on resources than the problems I was trying to fix.
I did download ccleaner and gave it a test run. Seems to be nice
and streamlined, and straightforward. (Thanks Tim)
Still can't get videos to play correctly, though. It drives me nuts.
Strange part is that the same machine had no issues like that for
about two or three years. I always create a restore point before
any installation of new stuff, and that was no help in this instance.
It's been nearly a year, and I cannot recall the exact circumstance
of the onset. Just seems a simple thing like vids should be easy.
GRRRRRRR!!! <<< frustration exclamation.

Steve <snip> McQ
I'd agree with you on the DIY desktop machines. But with companies
like Dell and HP, their laptops aren't open architecture and they do
control every aspect of the composition too. Even apple is using 'off
the shelf' controllers for graphics, Express card, ethernet, etc. They
just seem to do a better job of putting it all together. I find it
laughable when I see those ads for "I'm a PC" talking about how they
can get all this extra stuff for less money than a Mac laptop. But
what they don't tell you is the screen quality sucks, the bus speeds
are slower, the graphics chips are slow, etc. Contrary to popular
belief you do get what you pay for. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Steve
Jobs fanboy. I suspect he'd be a far worse tyrant than Bill Gates had
Apple won the PC wars. But I've been working with both Mac and PC
extensively for over 20 years and Apple hands down has the best
architecture in general for Machine design - for obvious reasons. Like
you said, they control the architecture and integration with the OS.
But I find it hilarious that the Mac hardware does Windows better than
the Windows only machines. Even the Mac Pro desktop machines do a
spectacular job running Windows 7. It always seems like the other guys
are playing catchup be it in the PC world, music players, or phones.
It's good though. Keeps everyone working harder to innovate.
K.
K.
My opinion differs a bit...when an OEM sells cards to Dell, only minor if
any revisions are done to firmware. Whereas most cards require different
firmware to work in Apples. Firmware which has to be submitted to and
approved by Apple.
There are some newer PC's which work pretty darn well. But you ar right, the
fact that the Aplle is a better PC than most PC's should make most PC
builders hang their heads.
Currently the best of the freebies I use for repairing Windows
machines:
CCleaner to remove the garbage (the registy tool works, but not well)
MalwayBytes .. to remove malware as it states
Spybot Search and Destroy. Activate the immunize to eliminate some of
the crap that you pick up on the web
Glary Utilities, a better registry tool.
Two others to consider are:
Ad-Aware with it's real time scanner and
SUPERANTIspyware. (it will remove those annoying "your computer is
infected" pop ups (called SmitFraud)
and two preventative tools:
Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard (Lavasoft)
Depending on the version of Windows .. AVG for XP and Avast for Vista
they just seem to work best in those back yards.
(note that the spelling has to mach as there are dozens riding in on
the coatails of the good guys)(if it is at C-Net or at Major Geeks,
good chance you got the right one.)
Dump IE and use Firefox .. more flexable with it's plethora of add ons
and safety features
Remember, nothing is bullet proof in Windows .. ANY version.
Macs are seriously overpriced for what you get ..an inflexable non
upgradable box. Not saying they don't WORK and work well. Just your
cost per mile JUMPS when you go Mac
Personally I use Ubuntu Linux and have for 3 years with no crashes and
NO worries about any malware.
But IF you are a gamer, or have to have Intuit or Adobe .. forget
Linux for now.
And installing it on a propriatary frinkin laptop is a total crap
shoot in a lot of cases!
Wait 5 to 10 years when Google Android will controll computing and it
will all be done on the web through servers in Iceland.
Lots of useful advice
+
> Dump IE and use Firefox .. more flexable with it's plethora of add ons

Firefox is becoming bloated now, it`s a terrible memory hog. It`s still
probably the best of the bunch tho, Google's Chrome is almost on a par,
much faster but one or two niggles keeping it in the number two slot (IMHO)
>
> Remember, nothing is bullet proof in Windows .. ANY version.
So true, but Macs aren't completely trouble free. I was doing sound on
a brass band concert on Saturday night, the concert was being recorded
by an independent company, on a top of the range Mac using ProTools,
with 40 minutes to go the Mac refused to display a picture - a common
fault apparently. the concert was eventually recorded on an old laptop.
So nothing is bullet proof.
Windows 7 is (IMO) the best Windoze so far.

I have a couple of boxes running Ubuntu, it`s good fun but it will never
replace Windows until it works just like windows, all that parping about
with repositories and command line stuff is beyond most users. It might
be free, but it aint easy. And yes, installing it on a laptop is a
nightmare, finding drivers etc. almost impossible for the average user.

I`ve tried a beta version of Google's Chromium OS which is Linux based.
It only works if you have an internet connection, otherwise you just get
a blank browser window. All the apps are online, most of them don`t work
or won't work if you aren't in the US. Speed is entirely dependant on
your internet connection speed of course.
Ron (Snowed in)

I figure this is just a myth. My son in law has a new Mac laptop. It runs
like a good laptop - no better, no worse.

Actually, Mac has used off-the-shelf processors and chipsets, just like
everybody else. They've used standard Intel chipsets such as the well-known
Intel 845, just like the PC majors, like Dell and HP.
I now use CCleaner, Spybot, Malwarebytes, AVG.
Is that a typo where you wrote "Malway", or is it a
different one, altogether?
> Dump IE and use Firefox ..

Did that about three years ago. I don't like Google
Chrome, either. Something about the layout just doesn't
suit me.

Steve <snip> McQ
It's no myth. Since you're suppose to be the big PC buff here, I
figured you of all people would have tested this by now. I've done
extensive testing of DMA performance between the MacBook Pro and top
of the line configurations of the HP 8730w, top Dell model (can't
remember the part #), and even the behemoth Boxx laptop (if you can
call it that - it's a desktop stuffed into a portable laptop shaped
case). Thought Mac is only a dual core processor, it's DMA performance
is the best which is the critical element for the ability to capture
and decode 10 bit uncompressed 1080i video. The HP does it, but it's
much closer to the edge. The HP laptop is over $6000 and yet it does
not perform as well as the less expensive MBP. Go figure.
K.

DMA testing - how esoteric can you get?
You're talking PC-XT technology in 2010!
BTW, which DMA were you testing? ISA DMA or PCI-E DMA? DMA is such a narrow
niche that it was never implmented widely for PCI!
> Thought Mac is only a dual
> core processor, it's DMA performance is the best which is

Says who?
Figure it out, Krooburg. DMA is for connecting with peripherals, but
uncompressing video is a Processor-intensive task.
>The HP does it,
> but it's much closer to the edge. The HP laptop is over
> $6000 and yet it does not perform as well as the less

Typical of a Mac bigot - test only 3 specific models of PC, and then wildly
extrapolate those results so you can pretend that you've proven that your
Mac is superior to every PC made.
>Go figure.
What I figure is that again, you're talking trash Krooburg. It may impress
technical lightweights who like to argue over which is the best freeware
registry scrambler, but back in the real world...
You are a daft cunt aren't you? I'm DIRECTLY INVOLVED with the
development of some of the most popular video capture devices used in
post production currently. We test ALL the best of the shelf platforms
for qualification of the product, DIY home brew boxes need not apply.
Such devices by all the top manufacturers have ALWAYS used DMA across
the PCI bus (ISA/EISA back in legacy days) and it's absolutely
critical that the *DMA* bandwidth be high enough to prevent frame
dropping. This is true of Avid, AJA, Autodesk, Black Magic, Blue Fish,
etc. But obviously YOUR knowledge of these devices and how they work
is SEVERELY LIMITED. Only the top off the shelf computer products get
qualified *if* they can hack it, and DMA performance is CRITICAL.
Laptops are limited off the bat so only the best of the best can make
it. The MacBook Pro IS A BETTER MACHINE than any top of the line PC
laptops. We've tried them ALL, GET IT?? And when the MBP comes out in
4 core version it will be even better.
K.
Yep Malwarebytes (still one word). Was late and the glasses needed
cleaning!
> You are a daft cunt aren't you? I'm DIRECTLY INVOLVED

And I'm President Reagan.
That's the beauty of the web. You can be whoever you want to be, alive or
dead. ;-)
If only it were true. It would mean you're taking the big "dirt nap"
instead of posting on things you know NOTHING about.
K.
Think about this. A world-renowned expert about PC architecture and
performance just happens to be posting on a live sound forum. Highly
improbable.
Think about this. A habitual liar and braggart posting under an alias that
he paraphrased from another forum, trying to make trouble here because he
pretty much killed off the last forum he posted in. Highly probable.
Krooburg, your claim that all Macs are superior to all PCs because the Mac
you tested has faster DMA performance than 3 arbitrarily chosen PCs is like
saying that all GM cars are superior to all Toyotas because one model of GM
car has higher capacity fuel pump than a few different Toyotas.
These days Macs are essentially Intel-CPU and chipset PCs with a few
cosmetic differences, and a different BIOS; running a Linux clone.
I NEVER said all Macs were superior. There are desktop PC motherboards
out there that have better bus and DMA performance than the top of the
line Mac Pros. But in the laptop realm, so far there is NO laptop that
has better DMA performance than the MacBook Pro. The only lacking
issue on the MBP is they do not yet come in a 4 core configuration.
Once they do, I would expect them to outperform any other laptop out
there running Mac OS, Widows, or any UNIX flavor. I don't expect you
to believe me Arni, but until you can disprove my assertions, your
arguments against hold no water. And if you had a clue, working for
the manufacturer I do testing for does not allow me to reveal my true
identity or that of the company since I cannot speak for the company
officially. As far as killing another forum, I seriously have no idea
what you're talking about. As far as posting under an alias, you're
damn straight. I wouldn't want any of you potentially stalking
buffoons to come knocking on my door one day. I see what Bob Moron
goes through on a daily basis and want no part of it.
K.
Sure you did:
"But I find it hilarious that the Mac hardware does Windows better than
the Windows only machines."
No qualifications of any kind on which Mac hardware was superior and which
Windows-only hardware was inferior.
Still not working. Have uninstalled flash, no joy. Uninstalled then
reinstalled IE & firefox with no joy. Both browsers crash as soon as they
open with no error message. Have no idea how to find out what is wrong and
no web browser to look online for the problem. I don't currently have access
to another machine either although I will have after xmas.
Anyone have any ideas or could look online for me to get some suggestions?
OE, bittorrent and everything else is working fine.
Phildo
Which version of Windows are you running? I'd take a look at the event
viewer right after a crash and see what blew up. That can give an
indication as to where the issue lies. Here's the info on how to get
the XP EV:

You could try. Have wanted to try Chrome anyway but I think that because it
affected both browsers at the same time it may well do the same to any
browser I install. Send it to the phildo.net address.

Google chrome differs from some competitive browsers in that:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2329307,00.asp
"Chrome's process isolation takes that of IE8 a couple of welcome steps
further: It not only isolates tabs, but also plug-ins such as Flash, and it
offers a Task Manager for your open tabs and add-ins. I haven't seen either
of these capabilities in a browser yet. And in addition to isolating
simultaneous tabs, it even isolates individual tabs sequentially; when you
navigate to a different domain, the tab process is thrown out and a new one
started, just in case there were memory leaks resulting from the previous
site."
IOW, a crashing add-on won't take the whole Chrome browser down.
Or try a XP repair. I am smelling you have other issues than the
browser. some times, a system gets so borked a operating system
reinstall is the only solution.
bob
I'd try using the setup disk & click "repair"
- Denny
The system rollback feature can be very useful at times. Yesterday, i
was transferring info from a flash drive to a old 98 machine. when it
put the flash drive back into the XP machine, it would not let me read
it in the windows explorer. I did the system rollback and all was well.
Something changed, Don't know what. did the system rollback and it put
it back the way way it was. You just have to roll back to a date before
the problem existed.
