Any one know a good place to source unbalanced and/or balanced Fig 8 cable
in the UK?

To make these kind of things,

http://www.dv247.com/cables/dv-studio-cable-dvsccpr203-3m-dual-phono-dual-jack-audio-cable--28255

also for Technics 1210's etc?

Cheers,

Gareth.

** What the FUCK do you actually want ??

Twin RCA leads for line level signals are a dime a dozen in lengths up to 7
metres.

However, the cable that goes from a tone arm to an RIAA pre-amp is a SPECIAL
lead.

Turntables like the 1210 have them supplied in lengths of about 1 metre.

You cannot extend them.

complete pain to navigate unless you've nothing else to do all day, so I
didn't find it.

I want exactly what I FUCKING asked for.
I was asked to quote for some multicore looms making up, including a batch
of various stereo looms using figure 8 cable. If someone wants to pay me
to make up some proper quality looms then fine, if not they can go buy some
dime a dozen shite and more fool them. This is for a college where
students can and will break anything they can.

STEREO for twisted pair and screen

Tho if you type in STEREO, it doesn't find it it`s page 246 in the

I realised after your post they'd sent me a printed catalogue the last time
I bought some multi. SO much easier to find stuff.

The Onyx cable is a wee bit thin, the Europa Stereo Microphone Cable on page
246 is what I was really looking for. 5mm outside diameter X 2.

Thanks again,

Phil, I note your observation about the "special" cable on tone
arms/RIAA/1210's. Would you care to elaborate?
I am only ever involved with DJ turntables for appropriate live use.

It's most likely a cable capacitance issue with the phono cartridge to
the pre-amp. They're relatively sensitive with such things and the
higher capacitance of a longer cable will cause the high end to roll
off sooner.

Blimey Phil, you're gomnna break your cage soon.

Look, I was looking for some cable to make up some convenient left/right
looms as requested. I also recall that in the past I have had 1210's that
needed new phono cables fitted. Technics are not the easiest of companies
to get spares from in the UK. SO, an afterthought was that sourcing such
figure of 8 cable may well mean I could fit it to the next 1210 I got in
that needed its cable replacing, since they also use a (pretty sturdy)
figure of 8 cable along with a cable clamp system that only allows a similar
type of cable to be fitted.

(I might have included all this information in my initial post, but
netiquette is such that you first post a succinct request, and when
additional data is requested or otherwise required, you then supply such
data. Otherwise all posts would be as long as this one and we would all get
very bored and have no bandwidth left.
And please note that my post was actually about sourcing cables for line
level looms - the 1210 posibiility was more of an aside, you seem to have
taken it as the main event).

HOWEVER you started ranting about 1210's needing "special" cable, and they
are not to be extended etc. So this got me thinking. OK, Phil might be a
total loony but he knows his stuff, and I would like to know more.
So Phil, what is is that makes this 1210 or any other RIAA cable "special"?
What would happen if I fitted some generic figure of 8 from Studiospares
instead of one supplied by Technics? Would the DJ explode? Would he sound
like a total Wuss with no proper top end? If I sourced balanced cable
should I connect both legs in parallel, only use one, or tie one to ground?

I note that most DJ decks do not in fact have captive phone cables, just a
pair of phono sockets that most people plug their mickey mouse 50 cent
cables into, without exploding or sounding like a Wuss. Or having to buy
special metre length ones from Technics. Apparently.

My breath is baited.

Gareth.

** It's very low capacitance, well shielded and has low microphony - not
the case at all with the vast majority of other, similar looking cables.
Because of the capacitance issue, the length is limited to about 1 metre for
use with MM cartridges.

high capacitance or too long cables are used.

Actually Phil, it was YOU who jumped to the conclusion that I wanted to make
extensions, I never said or hinted at any such thing. Sigh.

Here is some (mic) cable I found for my potential line level connections.
(Thanks Ron)
http://www.studiospares.com/Cable-Balanced-/Mic-Cable-Stereo-Per-Metre/invt/548120

It is not ideal for 1210's as it is balanced and may actually be physically
too big. My previous question still stands though - if it is suitable, is
it advantageous to tie both legs together, just use one, or ground one?

It would seem to make sense to just by one reel of cable and be able to use
it for more than one application. (Balanced, Unbalanced, Line, Mic, 1210?)

Cheers,

Gareth.

It's the issue of cable capacitance. A long run of cable will have more
capacitance and this will roll off the hgh end. Cable designed specially
for phono cartridges is manufactured to have lower than average capacitance.

The best answer is to have a preamp mounted in the plinth and have a low
impedance'line level' output, ideally balanced.

However DJ kit and DJs don't realy live in the pro world ( they use RCA
'phono' connectors for just about everything for example ) and disregard
such advice. DJs are also experts at destroying speakers. I have seen
the evidence in spades.

I thought that was what it might mean due to the 2 leads, but I didn't want to
jump to conclusions...

A figure 8 is a figure 8, such as found in figure skating.

Then why are YOU here??

Yes I tried google, and it didn't point to wiki, nor to any sites with drawings.

You are a real useless cocksucker, aren't you? You could learn a few things
about human decency from Mr. Allison.

Now fuck off, psycho

I was a bit befuddled by the term, myself. Must be a term not common in the
US, as I'd never heard it. But, using a little mental imaging and knowing
what
kind of cable was under discussion I surmised where the term came from.
I Googled it later. Funny thing is that most results show those type of
power
cables you see on boom boxes and home stereo gear. The type with a molded
end that looks like an "8" in cross-section.

** The term " twin flex " is also used for figure 8 cables.

See, it wasn't hard was it ?

Because I first started working in pro-audio 36 years ago. I am now a consultant in
the field.
