What kind of lighting rigs do you carry?
Do you guys generally sub out lighting for small/medium jobs? Say less
than 2000 people.
I have a minimal light set up (around 12 cans, 3 dimmer packs, some
scanners and some garbage dance lights). I found me self needing to
borrow more lights for some venues.

consider lights one step below cleaning horse stalls
but twice as annoying

We have 88 VLs in the rig here at the moment. Last night I could hear them
squeaking above an 8 piece band at full blast through the PA

Poor guy stepped in a turd there..... But I don't understand why you guys
think so little of the lighting guys. Sometimes they are your only friends
in a booth. Sometime you have to "do it yourself". And, personally, for
shows, the lights can really make or break the deal. I look at it as just
another component of a show. If a picture says a 1000 words, lights are
visual and sound is spoken.

I was mixing a Stars On Ice show (a live symphony accompanying Olympic
class skaters) when the orchestra was playing a quiet passage, skater
was gliding along, pirouetting artistically, and the lighting rig was
going 'ka-shunk ka-shunk ka-shunk' changing colors for the next cue and
almost drowning out the orchestra. Fortunately that was rehearsal and
the lighting designer changed his design so color changes happened
during louder passages.
Between the lighting rig and the cheering crowd it ended up a symphony
orchestra at rock'n'roll volume. Imagine Beethoven 7dB into compression.

I wish our LD would think of things like that. Our smoke machines are very
noisy and let off a loud hiss. She always fires them during the quiet bits.

It took a 'production meeting' between me, the LD, the choreographer and
the director, and only after I said 'If I turn the orchestra up at that
point they'll be blowing the roof off eight bars later,' did the
director say 'We should simplify the lighting,' and the LD responded
with 'I can make my changes earlier...'
It was his first non rock gig, he wasn't expecting actual dynamics in
the music ;-)
Once you get the skaters away from the choreographer they're really nice
people.

I used to like teching conventional lights. With proper advancing I
could prep the rig at the shop making for a nice easy show day. That and I
had fewer people to deal with than when you tech/mix sound.

between working or not. I'm with you - I wanna know what folks drag
around with them nowadays. I've got some old cans and dimmers and a
small spot that keeps things from being DARK. I'm a band leader with
PA & Lights as needed and really enjoy using my own rig so we can have
control. People tease me for being paranoid about sound companies
'cause I'm always complaining that they like to hit the suck button
when ever I get up to play. After lurking about here in this Google
Group I've decided that my parnoias are based on reality - many sound
people are mean and evil spirited and yes they do hit the suck button!

lighting as long as I have done sound because someone has to do it. We even
go out and do just lighting gigs once in awhile. One must eat.
I started with a small system in 1971. We had five geini towers with a rack
of 20 PAR64 on each lift. Extremely heavy Strand dimmers as I recall.
I went up to several hundred 64's in PRT before the frenzy stopped. We also
had a ton of color scrollers, cool idea.
Then intelligent lighting hit. Scanners, color changers etc. I took a small
plunge into the system of the day. Although I kept running into band LD's
that had no idea of how to run the system....
I've been downsizing ever since.
My way of doing it today....if it doesn't fit into a 24' truck it stays
home!
As far as hitting the suck button when certain bands take the stage?
Never did it, never will. My job is to make it louder. If it sucks when it
goes in, it sucks when it comes out, only louder.

I am running the sound in two weeks at a small outside venue. and I picked
up some lighting cheap from
a out-of-service band.
16 cans, three mixers, two fogs, two strobes, two chasers.
I set it up to see how it works....and gave the job of "Lightman" to my 12
year old son.
I think he will have a ball.
As far as the step below cleaning horse stalls...My wife has four horses,
and I will haul the hay, and stack it, but I refuse
to clean out the poop.
