Well, my 30 year old b&o 4400 might finally have had it. I'm starting to
look around at a new receiver. I really wouldn't call myself an
audiophile but would like something decent. I want it to be able to give
me room for expansion into home theater, etc. But a lot of the new
terminology I'm not familiar with (DTS, etc) So, if I get something I
want to be able to use it with DVD, 5 speaker surround, as well as just
CD's. It must have a good tuner as well as I live in the boonies.

Any advice? I'm very open to used gear.

Go with Denon AVR-3300 (about $750 there in the USA). Dolby Digital &
DTS processing, 105w/channel, 8-channel input for future
upgradeability, and really useful mode surrounds (the 5-Channel Stereo
Mode is amazing).

Found my self in a similar situation recently. For home theater
check out Yamaha, Onkyo and Denon - they all seem to be
well regarded. The minimum feature you'll want is dolby
digital for the 6 channel home theater sound. This feature
start around 300 USD for a 75Watt per channel amp. This
will also support your DVD movies. Check out

quality sound.

Well, since I gather you live in the States, why not just pick up a good
$300 Pioneer, Yamaha etc. surround decoder/receiver?

I know that Pioneer produce an extremely high quality surround sound
decoder/receiver (not sure which model though) which costs around $400
and has both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding capabilities (the leading
surround schemes), 5x110 watt output (very powerful), subwoofer out,
digital ins/outs and definitely doesn't lack in the quality department.

I'm not sure about the tuner though, you may want to get an external unit
(or, if it's still somewhat functioning, connect your old receiver to the
new
one).
