MP3 recordings can provide unusually realistic playback, if made the
right way. You wouldn't believe the degree of "you are there" feeling
you'd get from playing a free download --- unless you actually visit a
certain website and do it. The site address, and an explanation of the
science behind all this, are in an article that just go printed (August
2005) in a music and equipment review magazine, "The Audiophile Voice,"
Vol. 11, Number 1. (If you subscribe, ask to start with that issue,
that has Janis Joplin on the cover.) Info available at

http://audiophilevoice.com/

Generally, the secret of super-realism seems to be that some recordings
(like those downloadable from the URL in the article) happened to be
close-miked and then MP3-encoded at 160 kbps. However, you could
probably do some of this yourself, if you have decent equipment and
carefully read the article. (Also, the reviewers in the "T.A.V."
magazine often describe other super-realistic recordings, available on
specific CDs, when they use them to test loudspeakers, etc.)

Hello

If you expect people to subscribe to your magazine, you need to put
some sample articles online. It isn't good enough to just *say* you're
good... you need to prove it.

Start by posting that article on MP3 compression on your website and
get back to me. I'll read it and make up my mind whether what you say
is true.

Thanks
Steve

The only reason to tag it as _unusually_ realistic (rather than just
plain realistic) is your apparent conclusion that realism isn't
something normally associated with mp3.

OK, realism is not normally assoc'd. w/ MP3. In fact, the magazine
article does not say that MP3 compared quickly to the live perfomance
is audibly the same. It just claims that a certain group of recordings
with more than usual cues to the "you are there" illusion (and of
course it's just an illusion, as the article sez) has been MP3 encoded
in the downloadable file (identified in the article). And MP3 did not
ruin those cues, so the file still sounds unusually "real" when played
back w/ decent spkrs, etc. (The theory of all this is further explained
in the article.)

I'm not posting any copyrighted stuff, if it's still for sale. (The
original LP discs in the downloadable file are no longer being
manufactured.) Since I earn part of my living from textbook royalties
and magazine article fees, I'm pretty careful about not competing with
such sales. (Altho I don't claim to be any saint or angel ! )

Well then, forgive me if I don't pay to be able to read how to make
MP3s.

I'll tell you what... There are plenty of people here in this group who
would be happy to help you make great sounding MP3s for free. Just ask
any questions you might have. Welcome to usenet!
