What first-world country does that nowadays?  Oh I remember, the
old "I pledge allegiance to the flag" propaganda shoved down the
throats of unsuspecting children.  They even have children and
adults alike lined up like zombies for the "Oh say can you see
by the dawn's early light" Orwellian bullcrap at stadiums (while
Joseph Goebbels rolls over in his grave, so to speak).

But of course all governments have ruled by making their "subjects"
fear them more than they fear the enemies of those governments.
Likewise, all governments have come to power by brute force, bribes,
terrorism, and all manner of amorality and unconscionable acts.  So
whether theism, atheism, or any other form of brainwashing and
control becomes the law of that government, it's like jumping out
of the frying pan and into the fire.

Fortunately, all empires rise and fall.  Unfortunately, however,
it's always been "meet the new boss, same as the old boss."  The
point being that there are no good guys in a world full of bad guys.
Atheist, theist, atooth-fairiest, it makes no difference at all.
