So you're saying orbital eccentricity is zero, not 0.01671022. Where
did you get that, Book of Illusions?

It is from some Republican Christianic posting to Facebook -- which
is why I included the Facebook link. :)

Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little
children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes
will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I
will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold
will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young
people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will
show no compassion for the children.

"Those weren't real believers. They just claimed to be believers as some
sort of excuse."

This is rather like the No True Scotsman fallacy.

What makes a real believer? There are so many One True Religions it's
hard to tell. Look at Christianity: there are many competing groups, all
convinced that they are the only true Christians. Sometimes they even
fight and kill each other. How is an atheist supposed to decide who's a
real Christian and who isn't, when even the major Christian churches
like the Catholic Church and the Church of England can't decide amongst
themselves?

In the end, most atheists take a pragmatic view, and decide that anyone
who calls himself a Christian, and uses Christian belief or dogma to
justify his actions, should be considered a Christian. Maybe some of
those Christians are just perverting Christian teaching for their own
ends--but surely if the Bible can be so readily used to support
un-Christian acts it can't be much of a moral code? If the Bible is the
word of God, why couldn't he have made it less easy to misinterpret? And
how do you know that your beliefs aren't a perversion of what your God
intended?

If there is no single unambiguous interpretation of the Bible, then why
should an atheist take one interpretation over another just on your
say-so? Sorry, but if someone claims that he believes in Jesus and that
he murdered others because Jesus and the Bible told him to do so, we
must call him a Christian.

Heh. The poster seems to be unaware that the orbit of Earth is
elliptical, and the difference between aphelion and perihelion is about
5,000,000 km

If you asked him how long a day is, to the nearest second, I wonder what
his answer would be?

These Christians appear to read things that their cult leaders give
them or perhaps their leaders tell them this stuff from the pulpit.
They then go home, post the lunacy to Facebook while mangling what
their cult leaders told them even more badly. 10 feet. I wonder if
they ghot that value from their cult leader or whether the cult leader
told them 10 miles and the cultist got it wrong. So very amusing.

Due to your incessant predilection at telling lies and then never
answering for them, I'm going to have to ask for either a proof for that
assertion, or for a cite of your source.

Are you able to provide either one? No? I didn't think so.

It's so easy catching you in a lie. All I have to do is wait for you to
post something.

Are you not even the least concerned over how embarrassed your
descendents will be after reading the legacy of lies you have left
behind? They will disown you. Some will disavow even being related to
you at all.

It's only your life your destroying.

I always find it twice amusing that cultists are incapable of realizing
when atheists are joking. :) Cultists have such poor grasp of even the
simplest of science that theyu lack any knowledge to make the distinction.

The humour part of the brain is not easily accessible, he should get
his whole brain washed out of the loony dirts first before
contamination sets in.

Oh yeah! I didn't think of that. And does the Chrtistian who posted that
to Facebook live at sea level and refuses to climb any higher for fear of
burning up?

Which is why they created gods for themselves to play with. The
Geocentric believers on Facebook all proclaim their belief with
references to the contemporary versions of the classical Christanic
mythologies.

certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.

This is the place for theists.

There are many important ideas atheists promote. The following are just
a few of them; don't be surprised to see ideas which are also present in
some religions.

- There is more to moral behavior than mindlessly following rules.
- Be especially skeptical of positive claims.
- If you want your life to have some sort of meaning, it's up to you to
find it.
- Search for what is true, even if it makes you uncomfortable.
- Make the most of your life, as it's probably the only one you'll have.
- It's no good relying on some external power to change you; you must
change yourself.
- Just because something's popular doesn't mean it's good.
- If you must assume something, assume something easy to test.
- Don't believe things just because you want them to be true.

And finally (and most importantly):

- All beliefs should be open to question.

Never mind. That's all I needed to see.

The proper spelling for the word you used was in the sentence just
previous to this one.

But you misspelled it anyway.

I see, more plainer than ever before, just what type of low-class
individual you really are.

That's all I needed to see to know that you were lying, since you also
failed to provide a cite for a source, or two.

How proud of you do you think your descendents will be now?

I may mispeel (sic) words but am careful not to point it out to others.
I may say something like "I see, more plainer" while trying to avoid the
content of the argument.

The earths orbit in chaotic and even if it was not the ten foot idea
shows a lack of understanding of the concept of an ellipse.

We were talking about the Earth's orbit, and Hovind said _that_ was a
perfect sphere.

It's not a sphere and not even a circle, but as the earlier poster
said, it's an ellipse.

It's the axial tilt that causes winter - It's not just the shorter
days, but also Lambert's cosine law: a beam a metre square strikes the
Earth at an angle, to illuminate or heat an area proportional to the
cosine of that angle. The lower the sun, the larger the area it needs
to illuminate with the same amount of energy.

Inconsistency noted.
A sphere is a 3-dimensional object, whereas an oval is a 2-dimensional
object.
The Earth is an ellipsoid.

When it's summer in the Northern hemisphere, it is winter in the
Southern hemisphere, and vice-versa.

You need to be more specific. Which of those two possible options are
you referring to?

Actually, an ellipsoid has three dimensions, but it is symmetrical about
a long axis, like a football. A spheroid is symmetrical about a short
axis, like a tomato.

Context, the word you want to understand is context.

You can only make empty and, most of the time, false accusations.

But you never can finish explaining what you mean to say.

Anybody can do the first one.

It's the angle of insolation that determines the seasons, not
whether the planet is approaching perigee or apogee.

Winter Solstice only roughly equates to perigee because the people who
marked the solstice lived in the Northern hemisphere. Geography decided
the issue. :)
