Thought for the evening...

If Alan Johnson replaces Gordon Brown as Labour leader, Britain would
for the first time have an explicitly atheist Prime Minister, who
would then, in my estimation, have a 50/50% chance of outlasting the
next general election.

Who knows, maybe he'd see clearly enough to end Labour's infatuation
with single faith schools.

IIRC, wasn't John Major an atheist?

That'd be news to me. If he was, I don't think everyone accepts that
as true.

There were a lot of rumours about it at the time.

Labour is riddled with muslim MP's, Conservatives are not much better and both parties appear intent on Islamifying Britain as much as possible for some reason.

50:50 seems very optimistic to me. It would take a miracle to turn
Labour around in the next year - and atheists don't have those :-). I
would have thought it was in AJ's best interests to let GB take the
rap for the impending disaster then position himself for the following
election. That way he doesn't get accused of knifing the leader in the
back or carry the taint of losing an election.

That would be good!

That depends on the national psychology...do we think more of leaders
than parties? Sometimes a fresh face is enough rescue a government,
sometimes not.

Example: John McCain stood a fair chance, whereas Bush would not have,
had he been allowed to stand for a third term.

My understanding was that John Major was a strong secularist, but not
an atheist.

John McCain was a fresh face? {cringe} Bush wouldn't have one a
position as County Dog Catcher.

Last time that great scribe Iain <iain_i...@hotmail.com> chipped away
at his/her stone these gems of wisdom for posterity ...

In Oz we have to go back to Bob Hawk to find an atheist PM (1983-1991).
Atheists seem to have disappeared from Australian politics.
