I stumbled across _Meet the Fokkens_ on Netflix t'other night and
watched a bit of it. It is a documentary about identical twins
reputed to be the oldest working prostitutes in Amsterdam, with half a
century on the job. I stopped watching when the film showed something
of what they did for a living: flagellation of a sad masochist's
naughty bits is not to everyone's taste, however well it explains a
septuagenarian's continued employment in the trade.
Well, I mentioned it to the GF who speaks Dutch, and we ended up
watching the whole thing. And enjoying it, mostly for the characters
of these women who have managed to remain eminently sane throughout
lives filled with sadness (one appears to have been more abused by her
spouse than by any of her clients) and who exhibit an undiminished
zest for life.
This is not a film that would be made by Americans--it is too honest
about a subject Americans flinch from.
