D-Wave, based in British Columbia, is a small company which sells the
world's only commercial quantum computer. Latest customer? A
collaboration between Google, NASA and the Universities Space Research
Association.

There are very few people who understand how to build it... so they're
small in numbers. They're also small in terms of sales, because you
have to frame problems in terms of optimization in order to get the
benefits of the quantum computing power. Not a lot of people can do
that.

They have two customers: Google/NASA/USRA and Lockheed-Martin. They
don't say how much the computer costs, but I'd bet several million
dollars easy.

It's like supercomputers used to be: few can afford them, and the
people that want to use them can rent time on them. I think it's all a
win/win.

I can't imagine the NSA doesn't have one already. Maybe more. They've
got really good technology.
