It took 5 days and 9,000 law enforcement personnel to capture and/or
kill 2 amateurs. You can't reason with fanaticism of any stripe,
because they'll never understand what Americans take for granted. How
do you reason with someone that thinks it's ok to blow up children
with carpentry nails?
There's going to be serious backlash against Muslims. Again. And once
the groundswell of patriotism and nervousness fades, there will be
complacency again. The fanatics are patient, and there are a lot of
them, and they only have to be lucky once in a while to wreak havoc.
There was no God to protect the victims. No Allah to guide the hands
of the bombers. In fact, it fills me with despair to think that a
Christian God could just sit and watch an 8 year old get blown up, but
that's what happened. All the prayers uttered... and did a god
respond?
That alone ought to be enough to turn theists away from the
supernatural, but instead, there will be massive calls for renewed
faith because that's what's perceived as necessary to combat the foe.
All I could say to the parents of that little boy would be "I'm so
sorry for your loss." I couldn't begin to mouth the words "He's in a
better place" because he's not. I couldn't begin to mouth the words
"God works in mysterious ways" because I'd have to throw up.
I'm so sorry for your loss. The only brightness that I can cling to is
the unshakeable faith I have in the almost uniquely American talent
for adaptability in the face of adversity. I don't need evidence for
that.
