Are we auto-modding? Or are real humans looking at posts?

Well, although it's human eyes the system in automated and does use, as
you correctly guessed, Procmail.

Procmail pipes the messages to a Python script. This script then
removes the extraneous headers and stores the post in SQL tagged as
pending. We come along and login to the management portion and check
over the message. Then approve or reject it, if its rejected then a
reason is provided for doing so.

So it's not just someone VIM'in and sending on to sendmail or something,
there's a nice shinny interface to it all.

RSS feeds are generated for pending, and I have a little tray-area RSS
checker that pages me when new posts come in, to keep things nice and
quick (When I'm at a computer that is!)

Right now it's just me and Fidem but early days. It would be nice to
have a few people around the world helping out so we can cover 24 hours
a day. And the more the merrier.

You can view the queues and RSS feeds off the front page:

http://usenet.b0h0.com/alt.atheism.moderated/

One of the ideas being that all rejected posts should be public, so if
anyone is bias it should be plain for all to see.

BTW Mike can you give us a brief rundown on how you have become the
moderator of this newsgroup? As I recall, the late Clark Adams was the last
person to moderate this group, back when he was still living in New Orleans.
As I recall, he stopped moderating in 2005, following Katrina. Afterwards,
neither he, nor anyone else, seemed willing to pick up the ball and start
moderating again. So, effectively, this newsgroup was dead for the next
seven years.

Yes, that sounds pretty accurate for the first incarnating of
alt.atheism.moderated.

Because of the noise and quality issues of alt.atheism I became
interested in a moderated group, and noticed there was previously a
group in existence which was dormant.

I checked with the posters of alt.atheism to see how much interest there
might be in a moderated group and the interest was there (as well as
opposition of course, mainly from the theist regulars).

So there were two options:

- Try and revive the old alt.atheism.moderated group
- Start a new moderated group

The preference being the first, as that's the best name for the group
(and fits with group naming syntax).

The only way to change moderator is through access to the email addresses
used for it. This was held with infidels.org.

I contacted infidels.org and explained the situation and they granted me
access to that email address.

I setup a moderation system and pointed moderation posts to that system
and here we are today.

Back in business after what seemed to be a permanent demise.
