MERCURY- Represents the conscious mind and perceptions, its' retrograde
condition, indicates that the practical application of knowledge and
information has been primarily used to prove intellectual superiority. The
identity needs to balance the idea of conscious mind and the receptive or
intuitive functions, which are both the polarity of one idea. There may be a
"leap before you look" attitude, and an avoidance of intellectual demands.
Defensiveness about how intelligent one is, will be an effect of the
unconscious recognition of this avoidance. A fallacious notion may be held that
one need not increase or exercise critical thinking with diligence.
VENUS- Is the refection of mind, through the matter mirror. It's retrograde
condition reflects overcompensation and preoccupation with reflections. It is
very likely that other significators in the chart will signal a strong belief
in dis- empowerment. A focus on the company one keeps or the possessions that
one has as a way to gauge it's worth or value. It is a reflection of an
inferiority complex. An alternate expression of the retrograde condition is one
of reservedness and a "correct and proper" attitude toward relationships.
Either way this condition, reflects the unwillingness or inability of the
individual to see itself through the reflection of others. When we believe we
are incomplete without another or the "one" person in our lives, then the
Universe, acting on that energy we trust, will "send" us plenty of individuals
that reflect this belief in our incompleteness. When you believe that you are
complete as you are, then this belief will be reflected through the 'others'
that you meet.
MARS- Reflecting the needs of the identity to validate itself, Mars is a
powerful indicator of repression of that identity when retrograde. In any
retrograde condition, the early environment and parental structure must be
examined (the fourth and tenth houses, their rulers, the Moon's and Saturn's
condition). However, this is especially so in the case of planets that
represent the functions of ego and conscious mind. These elements
(Sun-Moon=identity, Mercury=conscious mind function, Venus=personal and
social reflection, Mars=the identity's beliefs about validity) depend on the
actual physical circumstances of early environment, and the stability reflected
within it (please refer to previous attachment schema note for more
information).
Without the reinforcement of the identity's validity, other issues can never
even be entertained or resolved. This is the issue with the Mars retrograde
condition. There may have been strong judgements within the parental
information/perspective patterns. Orthodox religious beliefs from the parental
models, or strict disciplinary attitudes very often are reflected through
children with Mars retrograde condition.
Mars retrogradation represents the invalidation and judgement of the identity
itself. People who believe in the idea that they are "Born sinners," may
believe that the identity is inherently negative. Actions must be guarded.
Repression of instincts. Feelings of being denied. Overcompensation to "finally
do something." Then a "bull in a China shop." Guilt, repression all over
again. ln terms of belief; judgement of natural assertion. Criminals react from
despair, as an effect of continual repression, and lack of conflict resolution,
finally exploding.
Anyone who acts on what they are capable of acting on, that it excites them to
do, inspires them to do, with integrity, will never experience Mars retrograde.
It results from a belief in the self's powerlessness.
JUPITER- Beginning with this planet, retrogradation will not be so apparent in
it's reflection in personality terms. This is not to say that it's validity is
lessened. However, it depends on the level or vibration of awareness an
individual is functioning on, that determines that appearance. Jupiter
retrograde indicates a lack of belief in deservability. The early environment
may have had little in the way of reinforcement for the identity's
capabilities or accomplishments. The person then forms a belief that reward or
recognition for the expression of self is not easy to experience, or may not
be there at all. The psychological effect may be an over amount of self
reliance, or resistance to "tooting your own horn." Creations (if this stage
is reached), are not "put on the table" for presentation. The invalidation of
inspired expansion. The disbelief in abundant ease.
SATURN- The planet Saturn is the most important symbol in our system. It
represents the idea behind the system; the experience of physical focus. Its
rings are held in tight organization in very sharp focus. The purpose of living
is simply to be all that you can be and to express all that you are. That's it.
Saturn (physical focus) does not limit this. Saturn reflects to you, in sharp
focus through the mirror of matter (your literal physical experiences)
precisely what you believe about reality. It tests your ability to consciously
perceive what your beliefs about reality create. There is nothing less
important about physical experience relative to non-physical or spiritual
experience. They are just two different ways to experience reality.
Saturn's retrograde condition indicates that the individual is in the process
of refocus. In the past life or lives the individual had been experiencing
being enmeshed in physical reality too heavily. External reality was the
determinant of motivation. Therefore now there may be hesitancy to "climb to
the top." There are certain perspectives the person wants to re-view concerning
the approach to material application of the self. Psychologically, the person
may perceive a lack of fatherly concern or effectiveness.
A) The father was not present. B) The father died early in childhood and a
step-father took his place. C) The parents separated early, and another father
figure took his place. D) The father was an alcoholic, or in any of the above
ways did not or could not instruct the child, or act as a model for physical
reality efficacy. Therefore, there is reticence towards application, until the
individual establishes their own philosophy and approach. Until this time the
individual may express an inferiority complex from the feeling of something
being missing. If the father was stable during childhood years, and Saturn is
retrograde it indicates that the child is in a reorientation to a less
materialistic physical experience, perhaps a more expanded one, that the
generational perspective the father holds, doesn't allow. ln belief terms; The
contemplation that physical experience may be something other than conforming
to accepted societal ambition. It may also represent a disbelief in the self's
impacting importance and manifestability.
URANUS- The law of momentum flow throughout the horoscope will reflect a belief
in the inability (from judgement) to feel a sense of choice in the creation of
their experiences when Uranus is found retrograde. Most often, the planets of
persona will be retrograde themselves, or in difficult interplanetary aspects
with it. Where Uranus resides and its configurations tells where rigidity needs
to be broken up.
Uranus represents the unconscious knowledge of our infinite
creatorhood. This is why it is the next step (orbit) outside of Saturn. ln
mythology Uranus was the father of Saturn. The creator (or father) of the
physical reality experience. However, Saturn through jealousy (Satan) castrated
(rendered impotent) his father so that no other offspring would appear.
Physical reality was considered the only reality (tipped into the unconscious
awareness). Uranus' placement is where we (need to) "wake up" to this
unconscious knowledge.
Its retrograde condition further complicates this idea. Retrogradation implies
a contemplative mode. Innovative application held in suspension until we
untangle the perspective of why we choose the creation of scenarios.
Psychologically it symbolizes the need to have one's uniqueness recognized. The
name Uranus means "Heavens," the discovery of the self's unique contributions
is the step to it.
NEPTUNE- If Neptune is retrograde in the natal chart, it simply signifies by
sign and house where the identity needs to co-fuse a more spiritual and
altruistic version of the archetypes involved. Where the ideal needs review. In
the past, a more Saturnine viewpoint has been adding to the powerlessness
perspective. It represents the need to discover the "All That Is" that is
within us and a reassessment of the mystical. Traditional texts may ascribe
idealism to the planet Neptune. Nothing removes the darkness, like the light.
This psychological effect allows us to stretch by envisioning ourselves to the
"All That Is" and ideal that is already there. Choosing preference and the
ideal in any situation or thing, this acts as a "carrot" that leads us away
from Saturn of this world, to a more expanded one at Neptune. But remember, the
ideal you find will always be you. Psychologically retrogradation of Neptune
reflects a lack of trust that the ideal can be found. A continuing "search"
does not allow the merging and blending to occur. There may be a preoccupation
with ego issues that do not allow the barrier of negative ego to dissolve.
PLUTO- The ruler of the dead, the son of Saturn. A totally transformed
perspective that represents the "birth" from physical reality to non-physical
reality. When this planet is retrograde, perspective can turn into "tunnel
vision." In the past personal perspective was the only perspective.
Manipulation is the subtle coercion to force one's perspective upon another.
Anyone who has to force an opinion or belief upon another, by any means,
obviously does not believe in the power and validity of that opinion themselves
or believe in it themselves. The individual with Pluto retrograde may meet with
some powerful persons or situations that DEMAND alteration of perspective.
Eventually, they will find that it is themselves and their own resistance that
they are meeting. Personal power is in a reassessment mode to find its source,
the self.
There is another condition dealing with the state of retrogradation that is
called "stationary." Rx or Sd. When a planet is about to turn retrograde it
will seem to "hover" for a few days (inner planets) to a few weeks (outer
planets) on one or two degrees. This is called stationary retrograde. When it
is about to resume forward motion it hovers again before it turns forward. This
is called stationary direct. Stationary retrograde planets in the chart imply
an accelerated unlocking from external focus, to the energy of reassessment
(retrograde). When the planet is stationary direct there is an extreme focus of
the expression of the energy of the planet. The implication in the birth chart
in the case of stationary retrograde, is that the identity had "gone as far as
it could go" with the external experience of the planet and it is time for
reassessment. In the case of the stationary direct position, the individual has
reviewed the archetype sufficiently, and it is time to take this insight, and
apply it.
