Solar astrology: A clinical tool for personality assessment.
Source
American Federation of Astrologers Bulletin. Vol 41(7) 13-24, Jul
1979.
Abstract
Tested the usefulness of solar astrological concepts in social work,
with
emphasis placed on their utility in a clinical setting. It was
hypothesized
that differences exist between persons engaged in ongoing therapy and
those
not involved in counseling and their ability to recognize personality
traits
characteristic of their astrological birth sign. Ss selected from 2
population groups responded to a questionnaire and checklist designed
to
secure their birthdate and a rank ordering of 12 trait clusters for
"self-description" and "description of a significant other." Results
confirm
the hypothesis in that the "normal" population was more likely to
select
their appropriate astrological personality traits than the "special"
population. Differences in Ss' astrological level of functioning or
awareness
of their inner potentialities are discussed, whereby extraterrestrial
influences or astrological phenomena are suggested as delineators
between
healthy and unhealthy personality adjustment. (PsycINFO Database

Astrologers and psychics as therapists.
Source
American Journal of Psychotherapy. Vol 36(1) 56-66, Jan 1982.
Abstract
Suggests that astrologers and psychics play a role similar to that
played by
psychotherapists and that they serve clients who do not wish to
characterize
themselves as having psychological problems. This is documented by the
writings of astrologers and by transcripts of visits to astrologers
and
psychics by a client. Astrology is useful because it
provides concepts and terminology that describe people's life states
and
problems. It also provides a good medium for incorporating modern
psychological therapies. Both astrologers and psychics provided
examples of
advising, increasing the client's self-esteem, preparing the client to
face
trauma, and empathic dialog. (9 ref) (PsycINFO Database Copyright 1982

Self, other, and astrology: Esoteric therapy in Sri Lanka.
Source
Psychiatry. Vol 44(1) 69-79, Feb 1981.
Abstract
H. S. Sullivan's (1953) argument that anxiety as a fundamental human
experience is alleviated by the use of various procedures that he
called
"security operations" is used in the present paper to examine the
meaning of
astrology in Sri Lanka. Astrology and the
doctrine of karma provide the relevant framework in which various
forms of
misfortune are understood and handled. An examination of cases reveals
that
astrology and the doctrine of karma enable a person of that
culture to create a number of structures that have a therapeutic
effect. (27

Abstract
Based on claims of traditional astrology, a significant
relationship between hostility assessed by the Buss-Durkee
Hostility-Guilt

control
analysis, a nonsignificant relationship between the hostility scale
and the
effects of Venus was predicted. The inventory correlated significantly

Abstract
Tested the hypothesis that the previously reported relationship
between
astrological birth sign and personality differences in extraversion
and
neuroticism can be explained in terms of self-attribution of
personality
descriptions. Responses of 799 adult Ss on a German version of the
Eysenck

astrology questionnaire were analyzed in several ANOVAs,
with belief in astrology being one of the independent
variables. Results support the hypothesis. (14 ref) (PsycINFO Database

Perceived locus of control and beliefs about astrology.
Source
Journal of Social Psychology. Vol 110(1) 65-71, Feb 1980.
Abstract
45 male and 88 female college students were administered Rotter's
Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, a similar scale by H.
Levenson
(1972), the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and a
questionnaire
assessing belief and knowledge about astrology. External
beliefs about chance or fate were positively related to belief and
action-taking in astrological activities, while other measures of
locus of
control including the Rotter scale and beliefs about control by
Powerful
Others, were not related to an interest in astrology.
Females were significantly more likely than males to believe in and
have
knowledge about astrology. Results suggest that externals
can be differentiated and identified by the kinds of efforts they
might make
to enhance reinforcement. (12 ref) (PsycINFO Database Copyright 1981

An empirical study of the relation between astrological factors and
personality.

Journal of Social Psychology. Vol 105(2) 229-236, Aug 1978.
Abstract
Tested 2 astrological predictions: (a) extraversion is related to
being born
under the odd-numbered zodiacal signs and introversion to being born
under
the even-numbered zodiacal signs, and (b) that people born under the
so-called water signs would show greater emotionality and would thus
have
higher Neuroticism scores than the other Ss. 917 male and 1,407 female
adults, mean age 35 yrs, were administered the Eysenck Personality
Inventory,
and their birthdates were ascertained. Results for males and females
separately and jointly support both hypotheses. It is concluded that
artifacts are unlikely to have produced the results. (20 ref)

Accuracy in self-perception: The fallacy of personal validation.
Source
British Journal of Social & Clinical Psychology. Vol 17(3) 231-235,
Sep 1978.
Abstract
Previous studies have found that Ss rate randomly selected
astrological
statements as highly accurate descriptions of themselves and this has
been
held to show a "fallacy of personal validation." Three experiments (in
which
a total of 91 Ss were given true and false feedback on the results of
16 PF
testing) are reported which investigate possible explanations. Ss do
not
appear to accept such statements because of demand characteristics or
social
desirability effects. Evidence is presented to support the alternative
hypothesis that Ss can distinguish true from false personality
descriptions
and perceive astrological statements as accurate descriptions of most
people
including themselves. (17 ref) (PsycINFO Database Copyright 1980

Multidisciplinary Research. Vol 4(1) 1-63, Apr 1976.
Abstract
Theories of the etiology of delinquency are reviewed; some research in
chronobiology is summarized. The basic method for interpreting an
astrological chart is outlined. It is noted that the potential utility
of
astrological symbols to create a "psychoglyphic" system for the
depiction of
psychodynamic constructs does not depend upon the existence of a
causal
relationship between planetary events and behavior. A single S was
given the
California Psychological Inventory and his horoscope was cast. Both
measures
are described, interpreted, and points of similarity noted. The
therapeutic
strategy decided upon is outlined; outcome is as yet unknown. (75 ref)

Journal of Psychology. Vol 89(2) 259-260, Mar 1975.
Abstract
Questions R. Pellegrini's 1973 findings that there are marked
correlations
between the astrological sun sign of birth and the Femininity scale of
the
California Psychological Inventory. Ss born under Capricorn,
Sagittarius,
Libra, Leo, Scorpio, and Virgo scored distinctly higher than average
on the
Femininity scale. The current author found that when the 6 signs
corresponding to higher Femininity were arranged in order, they were
consecutive signs. The January 21-July 23 Femininity scores were
within the
range 15.96-17.58; in the other half of the year, the range was
22.37-24.46.
A possible explanation for this difference is presented. (PsycINFO

Science looks at the occult.
Source
Psychic. Vol. 4(5) 50-55, Jun 1973.
Abstract
Discusses revival of interest, particularly among young people, in
mysticism,
astrology, transcendental meditation, and nonrational
phenomena in general. It is suggested that this revival is related to
the
belief in the perfectibility of man and is a reaction against the
depersonalization of modern technology. Differences between occult and
mechanistic technology are considered: occult technology is directed
toward
the well-being of man as a psychical organism, while mechanistic
technology
is aimed at his physical well-being. The use of scientific methodology
in
various parapsychological experiments is considered. It is also
suggested
that occult practices are used not so much to obtain hidden
information as to
achieve self-transcendence, and that this is the reason why most
studies are
not scientifically documented. (PsycINFO Database Copyright 1974

Abstract
Examined the relation of self-report knowledge about
astrology, exposure to astrological texts and perceived
validity of astrology, leading to an acceptance of
astrological character descriptions. 87 students (18-51 yrs old) were
divided
into a group of examiners and a group of examinees. Each examiner was
given a
packet consisting of the 12 astrological sign descriptions, while each
examinee completed a questionnaire, which the examiners used to
ascertain
their astrological sign. Examiners then gave their examinees 2 sign
descriptions, the correct astrology description and the
description immediately following it. Results show that Ss who knew
their
astrological sign judged the personality profile corresponding to
their sign
to be a more accurate description of their personality than an
alternative
astrological sign profile. Neither strong astrological belief nor
awareness
was necessary for this effect to occur. (PsycINFO Database Copyright

An empirical study of an astrological hypothesis in a twin population.
Source
Personality & Individual Differences. Vol 13(10) 1135-1144, Oct 1992.
Abstract
Tested 238 pairs of homo- and heterozygotic twins (135 pairs (aged
3-17 yrs)
and 103 pairs (aged 2 mo-59 yrs), respectively) to determine if an
astrological hypothesis may correspond to a factor that differentiates
both
personalities in a twin pair. The test involved the choice of 2
psychological
characteristics to which the families had to attribute the Christian
name of
each of the twins. The characteristics were polarized in relation to
one
another (for example, more energetic or less energetic) and were
extracted
from a preliminary astrological study of the 2 birth charts of twins.
153
exact replies and 65 reverse replies were obtained; 20 replies
declared that
no difference had been found. Statistical comparison of proportions
showed
that exact replies could not be attributed to chance and support the
astrological hypothesis as a new element in differentiating
personality
within a pair of twins. (PsycINFO Database Copyright 1993 American

Introversion-extraversion and sun-sign.
Source
Journal of Psychology. Vol 122(3) 275-278, May 1988.
Abstract
J. Mayo et al (see PA, Vol 63:5502) confirmed the astrological
proposition
that people born with the sun in an odd-numbered sign of the zodiac
(Aries,
Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) show a tendency toward
extraversion, whereas those born with the sun in the remaining
even-numbered
signs, show a tendency toward introversion. In later publications,
such as H.
J. Eysenck (1979, 1981), however, Eysenck stated that this sun-sign
effect
could be explained by self-attribution based on the Ss' astrological
knowledge. In the present study, birthdates and scores on a
personality
inventory for 992 adults were analyzed. Results support the result of
Mayo et
al and show that self-attribution could not account for this result.

Abstract
Discusses astrology as both a science and an art--a science
in the form of setting up a horoscope (an exacting process because

factor has to be calculated and measured) and an art in that the

Astrological counseling in contemporary India.
Source
Culture, Medicine & Psychiatry. Vol 7(3) 279-299, Sep 1983.
Abstract
Astrological counseling constitutes an important but relatively
unexplored
sector of India's medical and psychiatric traditions. The present
study
provides a critique of studies of divination-as-therapy and presents a
symbolic or phenomenological approach to the analysis of
astrology as a form of situation-focused counseling. Three
arts of medicine--the art of dialog, the art of prediction, and the
art of
remedy--organize the therapeutic effectiveness of the counseling
session. In
analyzing these arts, the discussion extends the idea of performative
efficacy by developing the concept of ""therapeutic space,'' defining
it as
the typographical framework that encompasses both the scene of the
advisory
session and the scene of the client's everyday life. The experiential
continuities that are established in this space are constituted
through
imaginal activity, which is indigenously understood as ""picturing''
the
client's situation. The text of an advisory session between an
astrologer and
his politician-client in the city of Banaras is presented. (30 ref)

Abstract
Contends that the mythological meaning of Uranus contradicts the
astrological
meaning; a mythological name and legend more appropriate for Uranus is
Prometheus, which expresses Uranus's essential astrological nature
with
regard to the act of cosmic rebellion, intellectual genius, the symbol

concluded that
the archetypal identity of Uranus with Prometheus can expand

this planet's meaning. (PsycINFO Database Copyright 1984 American
