I guess I haven't visited the video store for awhile. Now that I
browse through the "kung fu" section, there is a whole pile of new
videos. Well I say "new" as in recently released in video although
the movie is old.

There's the Wu Tang Collection, the Shaolin Collection, and the
Shaolin Dolomite Collection. I know some of the Wu Tang stuff was
out already but it looks like it grew into a bigger selection. I
haven't seen the Dolomite stuff until now. There's a pimp-looking
guy on the video box and I guess he is Rudy Ray Moore. I don't know.

The crappy part is that there is some title renaming and the cover
box can include pictures that may be from another movie. So you have
to read the amateurish description, on the back of the video box, so
you don't buy something you have already or don't really want. You
can't depend on the previous title because its changed.

So far the most interesting title is something from the Dolomite
collection called "Kung Fu vs Yoga". They have some Indian guy who
is fighting in a typical kung fu movie. But he does all kinds of
super flexible moves. Nothing like Dalsim from StreetFighter but
interesting enough. I can only assume that it will probably be very
different.... and I think I might get it. :) Yeah. Its a bit
boring right now.

Don't depend on the plot description either -- they're quite ready to
copy a popular plot description to go with a popular title! Of the 5
Chow Yun-Fat releases, here are the "plot descriptions":

GOD OF KILLERS -- Story of Wu Viet. The only relatively accurate plot
description, and the best of the 5 films of Chow's that Arena
re-released.

HARDBOILED KILLERS -- Police Sir. This is really a silly comedy with
CYF as a rookie cop who keeps bumbling his way to the correct solution
for varous crimes, yet the box rips off THE KILLER plot. "Based on a
real-life assassin, the Hard Boiled Killer leaves behind the most
dangerous clue at the scene of his latest hit: a living witness. Now
it's a race against time as Chow tries to silence the heavily guarded
woman who witnessed the killing -- either he gets her or the syndicate
will get him." The box also features several pix from THE KILLER.

HONG KONG SPECIALIST -- Blood Money. Misleading, to say the least --
there's a pic from THE KILLER on the front, and the description reads
"Chow Yun-Fat plays a Hong Kong stuntman who gets mixed up in some nasty
triad schemes. Using his wits and skills, Chow must show who's boss of
bosses in this gripping Hong Kong action flick." In fact, BLOOD MONEY
is a straightforward melodrama about a family of stuntmen victimized by
an uncaring society -- and CYF, one of the sons, spends about half the
movie offscreen in Taiwan.

KILLERS TWO -- The Executioner aka Heroic Cops. This is one of the most
egregiously bogus ones: "Hong Kong action star Chow Yun-Fat reteams with
his "Killer" costar Danny Lee in a sequel made in the John Woo
tradition." As has already been posted here many times, the film was
made many years *before TK and there is no discernible overlap of style
or (of course) plot.

SHANGHAI KILLER -- Goodbye Hero aka Goodbye My Friend. The plot
description ("Chow Yun-Fat plays top don of the Triads as he takes on
all the Shanghai underworld can throw at him in the fight for Triad
supremacy") is completely spurious: the movie is mostly set in Thailand,
& features an evil religious cult, mystic rites in a secret temple, lots
of gratuitious violence and sex, and *hilarious production values.

I'm kind of grateful to Arena for widely releasing what would otherwise
be unobtainable films -- but you definitely need to get the inside scoop
before you buy, & not assume that anything on the box is actually
related to the film.

Cheers,
Winnifred

Arena Home Video, Hong Kong Connection and Xenon
Entertainment Group are all the same company and they
are releasing a number of Hong Kong titles that they got
by partnering with the UK based Eastern Heroes. They
are targeting the African-American population by
advertising in Black magazines like Rap Pages, Source and
Vibe. They sometimes have popular Black stars like Rudy
Ray Moore, introducing the Shaolin Dolemite Collection.

If people are interested in purchasing some of the titles
released by Xenon Entertainment Group they are available
from my web site.

I'm guessing it could be TWO GREAT CAVALIERS. Leung is killed off
within the first ten minutes. It's a Tan Tao Liang and Angela Mao Ying
Taiwanese vehicle -but this is a guess without being able to look at
the tape.

The reason they don't release them under their original titles is
because they are illegal releases. I wouldn't be surprised that a few
titles were public domain, but that doesn't make up for the brunt of
it. The only tape they released under its original title was their
pirate of the dubbed, cut MY LUCKY STARS, and the Yuen Wo Ping
production of THE BUDDHIST FIST. Ironically, Tai Seng never bothered
to sue them - but threatens to sue some guy who trades copies of the
uncut BULLET IN THE HEAD, TS won't release. Don't ask me about that
logic! Regardless, the other prospective was they could retitle them
to match soongs form the bad Wu Tang double album (Sorry, I prefer
ENTER to the horrible, commercial (Rza isn't a biggot but why does he
play up to five percenters on a few tracks??? Answer: money to be made
offa hate) double album scam. Regardless, it appeals straight to the
Hip Hop audience who tend to be more into music first, films second.
