b. How can this ascii diagram be sorted out better?...

For example, how do you reduce the diagram to a more narrow width?...
it has long lines very wide at about 220 columns currently.

By making sure that you are using spaces and not tabs and makking it
clear where the beginging/end of lines are. You have a very bad case
of line rapping and your news poster is probibly to blame but not
using shorter lines is at fault too.

Letting us know if this is for the same use as the PDF would be nice
too. It says "You are here" but if they are going to be moving around
with this on a slip of paper then that is a bad idea.

Instead of doing this as a copy of the pdf I would redo it from
scratch and make it smaller, not to scale, and with a legend instead
of trying to fit each name in each room.

Thank you!... that's nifty!

I used only spaces.

The you are here will be deleted. It's intended for people not in
the building. An additional diagram in ascii would help people
get a more clear idea of the organization of our library.
There are circumstances where ascii is preferred.

A smaller diagram with legend is a good thing along with the
labelled diagram. Both can be made available.

This one works. But it seems like it has too much empty space.
And it doesn't have the panda. :(

I agree with FP about the need for a legend (or at least
abbreviations). I don't see how you can get the image any smaller
without them. Below are some 70-column renditions of your map (using
Jave). I used abbreviations, but you could easily use numbers/letters
in parentheses/brackets.
