Since I came on the Internet....I was interested in the story
of $cientology drowning the judge's dog and had first a simple
picture then the present one. After a while I found there was
a newsgroup of ascii pictures.

This has been discussed before. Pictures have been created
for lineprinters, before that for teletypes, before that
for typewriters (more difficult because you had to type it
right without editing). It is part of the more general
tradition of making pictures from a mosaic of found objects;
letter shapes being only one possibility.

at Joan Stark's material, and talk to Colin Douthwaite
about history.
You ask how it is made: nearly always with a simple text
editor, not with special tools. Automatic conversion
from GIF to ascii performs very poorly....usually only
as a starting point to redraw over.
I don't know whether anyone has put together a manual
of technique (perhaps you should?). There are several
broad categories though. You might divide them by
the amount of contrast and anti-aliasing, from
uniform blocks ########

Yes, I consider myself a fan of ASCII art...
I first saw a few little pics in 1995 and was totally
amazed at them. I couldn't believe that people actually
made them. (Didn't people have a life??)

Text-based art has been around for years and years...
There are some similarities between ASCII art and teletype
pics, typewriter art, ANSI art, concrete poetry, and typography.

I don't use a proggie or special software. I use Windows notepad
and create pics freehand, for the most part. Few conversions
programs give great results.

The first ascii art I saw was in an email signature. After seeing a
few more I searched for them on the web. At that point I didnt know
what they were called so it was tough looking for them. I finally
found the listing on Yahoo and since then I became a fan. I like being
able to draw something. I am hopeless with pen and ink but here I can
create in on the keyboard. Kind of funny considering I freelance write
and create on the keyboard in that way too. If I didn't have a life I
would never have a life afk.
I've been a fan for over 2 years. In the last year I have been making
my own ascii. I posted my first try to Albert's ascii sig email list.

I think thats been answered a couple of times now. Until I read more
about it in the newsgroup I thought it had started on the Net with
email smiley's and etc.

Always on NotePad. I started with the courier font in my emailer or
where ever but found it became warped when I transfered it around. So
now I always use the FixedSys font and Notepad.

The first ASCII-art I know about is the Mona Lisa. It was a piece
designed to test 11x15 line printers on main-frame computers. It was
passed around on various media formats and languages. As far as I know,
it has exhisted since the early 70s.
