Diddling is the name given to changing/improving original ascii art posted
to the newsgroup. The diddled picture is usually greatfully accepted by the
original artist, except in the following circumstances:

* You have removed the original credits, and maybe replaced them with your
own.
It is generally accepted that if you have made a considerable change to
the picture, you may add your credits to the picture *in addition* to
those of the original artist, in the form "jgs/hjw", for example.

* You have changed the picture for the purpose of causing offence to the
original artist or others.
If you want to insult someone, please do it by private email and not
using someone elses art to do it. It may be construed that the original
artist is somehow involved in the offensive message.

* You have degraded the picture for the purpose of getting at someone.
This is *not* welcome in alt.ascii-art, a group for the posting of ascii
art pictures, not a group for feuds and wars. Please refrain from
provoking arguements by diddling someone's picture to offend them.

Diddling can be a lot of fun for many people, but it is easy for someone to
go and spoil it for everybody.
Here is a great example of how diddling can make stunning pictures that are
the product of many artists:

This is Henry Segerman's perspective castle. This finished product was the
product of many diddles and suggestions from a variety of artists, of which
only a:f (Andreas Freise) was credited for the horse. This is the where the
problem arisies: How much change is required before your initals can be
added? I`m afraid this is up to your own personal judgement.

--- DOCUMENT ENDS, COMENTARY BEGINS...

I wrote this a few months ago, and I finally got round to posting it. I
would welcome constructive suggestions and spelling corrections (<g>) but
not arguements about diddling. I have tried to make this document as
'personal choice' oriented as possible, as there is no way to define what is
enough change to warrent a name addition and what is a good or bad diddle.
Rewording welcome. Arguements not. In the event of arguements the document
will fall victim to the dreaded delete key.

Let me know,
-Martin

The 'final' version of the castle in my eyes was the one with the list at the
end of who contributed what. Yes, if someone is going to use the picture for
something they are far more likely to remove the list than to remove the
initials, but it is something between initials added and nothing. I would
think many places, including specific ascii art sites would leave the credits
list on at the end. I havent seen any other art using a list but it seems the
most sensible way to do it to me.

Btw, I've seen a version of the castle on an ascii art site with the list
removed, but initials of people on the list added to it. I'm quite happy with
that...as long as its my initials first ;)

(that wasn't an argument was it? ...gotta be careful - wouldn't want to see
this hand crafted document mercilessly slain by the terrible delete key ;)

Sorry Henry... That was ther version I had in my ascii collection. Can you
post the final version?
As for arguements... no, it wasn`t (unless someone takes offence at that,
which I really doubt!)
(I meant an arguement with someone else, not with me! I posted it for
suggestions!)

Oh you mean stuff like 'if you do X to the picture then you should have
you
initials on it'?

Anyway, I have 2 versions - one shaded and one not - take your pick - I
like
them both:
