Oh, sorry then. I did't know that. We don't learn much exceptions in English
lessons.
That rule has no exceptions that I know of. It just goes by pronunciation
instead of spelling. Since "urinal" is pronounced "yurinal", it's as much "a
urinal" as it is "a yak" or "a youngster" et cetera.
-jg
Well, if so, I don't care. I know not one case of writing "urinal" in my
whole lifetime (actually not much) so far.

The traditional 'rule' in English is that if a noun begins with a
vowel, then 'an' is used as the article, instead of 'a.'
But this is not a good rule, because there are too many exceptions.
Many English-language computer 'spell checkers' use this rule, and
it causes some hilarious results. :)

Joey, if they didn't teach you the exceptions, you've missed out on half
of the English language! English has assimilated (shades of the Borg!) so
much from so many other languages, that English is a highly irregular
language compared to most other languages.

Well, they did, but not everything. We had loooong lists of irregular verbs
to learn (what I never did, because I knew most of them already). But
exceptions to certain rules were a rather unimportant topic. But since I
learned most of my English myself and not in school, by reading, playing
English computer games and so on, that wasn't so bad. But due to several
games with speech I got a rather good speaking for myself, though I was only
two times in England, which was when I was rather young (nine and ten, I
think).

Wrong, sorry.
My dictionary says:
urinal /'j(u)er(ie)n(e)l, j(u)'ra(i)- || 'j(u)r(ie)-/
So it is pronounced not to begin with an vowel, but with a consonant.
And because of that it is *a* urinal (think of a unit or a union...)
(u) an upside down omega

Oh, right, now i see that the (e) before the last l was printed in
italics.
And in the "pronunciation table" there is
