Let us remember
those in wheelchairs
limbless and alone
in hospitals and homes
wishing white crosses
marked where they are.
Let us remember
those in straight chairs
mindless and alone
in hospitals and homes
wishing white crosses
marked where they are.
Let us remember
those having no chairs,
no hospitals and no homes
wishing white crosses
marked where they are.
Each of them reminds
each one of us
that what we have
may have been bought
with their limbs,
their minds
and their lives.
Such heroes among us
know that their deaths
might have been
easier for all to bear
than a reminder of their
wishing white crosses
marked where they are.

Thanks for reposting this, Jeanne. It's too easy to not think about
war and its consequences, even on a day that's meant to honour
veterans. I sometimes wonder how many of the people so incensed about
the Iraq War three years ago, when it was big news, even notice that
it's still going on today.
Hear, hear!
You are correct, George.
Shameful the ignoring...
Netflix had a PBS POV documentary on three who meet planes
in Bangor Maine... will go get the title... "The Way We Get By"
which warrants your viewing on line as I did, unless you prefer
them to mail it to you.
