I have a question about
the shipping of oil paintings.

If you ship a painting in
cold weather like -20 and
the painting is sitting in
a cold cargo hold for 4 or
5 hours will the paint crack
and the painting be ruined?

Thanks

In article <367FF23A...@blufire.net>,

I'm not an expert...but...I would think not. Since oil paints are "oil"
based, the paint itself shouldn't be harmed by temp. The harm is more likely
to be to the supports of the painting, since canvas, wood, etc., are subject
to expansion and contraction due to humidity or temperature. I do know that
most cracking of oil paintings are caused mainly by two factors, problems
with the support and drying of the paint. Freezing tempuratures are more
likely to cause contraction (or expansion? I'm not sure..lol) of the support,
than cause actual harm to the paint itself. Like I said, not an expert, but
that's what sounds reasonable to me.

Have you ever actually seen this
happen to an oil painting? Someone
wants to buy one of my paintings and
I'm scared to ship in this cold
weather I don't know what will happen
to it.

you shouldn't have any problem with the paint. Just be sure the painting
is properly crated.

The cold weather will not have any serious effect on the painting. Just
make sure it's properly crated.
