He was a 19th century french academic painter.He was the epitome of the
classic academic genre the french impressionist,whistler,and the english
pre-raphealite brotherhood,all rebelled against.He adhered to the classic rules
of the italian,greek,raphael,etc. Today most of the art world would lump all
realist or representational painters into one camp.
In the past the lines of seperation was clear between the different schools of
painting.You belonged to one school of
thought,classicism,romanticism,impressionism,or realism.
I suggest you go to a library and find a book on the french salon
painters,You will see and learn a lot about him and his contemporaries.
