Norman William Alfred LINDSAY was born in Creswick, Victoria, in 1879.
Brother to Sir Lionel, Sir Daryl, Percy and Ruby. The most renowned
Australian black and white illustrator of the period, Norman undertook
studies with Walter Withers (b.1854-d.1914) at his studio and at home with
his older brothers Lionel and Percy. Combining a technical brilliance in
draughtmanship, with the erotic overtones of Rubens and Beardsley, Norman's
works often caused controversy in a period noted for its moralist attitudes.
Norman is regarded as Australia's "Premier Etcher", having earned the
creditability as a master of the pencil, pen, ink, watercolour and oil
painter.
'The subjects themselves touch upon elements of fantasy and mysticism. We
are offered a glimpse into the world of magicians, satyrs, fawns, dryads and
pirates. Whilst often humorous, Lindsay tells us much about human psychology
and ourselves through emotions, facial expressions and personal costumes.
