The Martin County Public Art Advisory Board is seeking to purchase or
commission a public artwork for the exterior space of the new Palm City
Community Fire Station.
Site and Partner Agency
Partner Agency: Emergency Services
Emergency Services Department provides the fire and emergency medical
services for incorporated Martin County.
Building Description
The one story, building is designed in Florida cracker style with a steel
roof and a large wrap-around front porch, as indicated in the site plan. The
program includes 3 fire truck bays, living quarters for 7 firemen, offices,
and community room.
Building Project Schedule
The schematic design phase is complete. The project is scheduled to be bid
on January 2003, with a construction time period of 12 months. The building
will be open in February 2004.

Artwork Description, Schedule and Budget
Artwork Description
The Martin County Public Art Advisory Board is seeking a work of outdoor art
for the new community fire station. The work may the placed in the main
exterior entrance area of the Fire Station, or another area proposed by the
artist. The artwork needs to be "drive-by" scale as this will not be in an
area that shall receive significant pedestrian traffic. The artwork can be
an existing artwork or new site-specific commission. The artwork may be
required to accommodate some landscaping. All submissions will be
considered, including artwork with a fire services theme and/or functional
artworks.
Artist Services
The following activities may be required:

Anticipated Art Project Schedule
· Artist Selection: June 2003
· Design Completion: September 2003
· Installation: February 2004
Art Project Budget
The total budget established for the project is $10,540. The budget includes
all costs to the artist: i.e. artwork proposals, artwork itself, mounting
materials, installation, artwork shipping, insurance, travel and sales tax.
Artist Eligibility
The project is open to any visual artist with experience implementing their
ideas and work in the public realm and with public agencies. All exterior
durable media will be considered. No geographic restrictions apply.
Application Process
The application process is managed by the Arts Council, a non-profit agency.
The Martin County Public Art Advisory Board (PAAB), a board of appointed
citizens, serves as the selection committee with the addition of
representatives from the community, partner agency and architects. The
Martin County PAAB will review the submissions and interview a short-list of
artists prior to the final selection for the project. The Public Art
Advisory Board shall consider the following criteria:
1. Architectural enhancements shall be located in areas where residents and
visitors live, work or congregate and shall be highly visible and
accessible.
2. The appropriateness of the work to the site, permanence of the work
relative to environmental conditions, maintenance requirements and costs,
and the enduring nature of the artistic statement.
3. The sensitivity of the work to the aesthetic and cultural traditions and
the history of Martin County, Florida and also to the surrounding
neighborhood's character.
4. The artist's biography and resume, examples of existing works, technical
competency, similarity to existing works of art and the following basics:
form, texture, color, clarity, line and medium.
Application Requirements
The information and documentation below must be postmarked or arrive at the
Martin County Council for the Arts before 5:00 PM on the stated deadline
1. Statement. One paragraph maximum which illustrates the
relationship between the work submitted in slides and the
specific project. Be sure to indicate if a specific work is for sale.
2. Resume. A current and professional resume, emphasizing
public art experience and public commissions (if any).
3. Slides. Ten 35mm 2" x 2" slides of completed artworks
or projects, in a 9" x 11" slide sheet. The works must
have been completed during the last five years. Slides
must be labeled with slide number (1-10), artist's name
and title of work. Slides must also have a dot in the lower
left-hand corner to facilitate loading into carousels.
4. Annotated Slide List. A slide identification sheet which
gives the specific project number and name, the artist's
name, address and phone number, and, for each slide, the
corresponding slide number, title of work, medium,
dimensions, date of work, price of work and if applicable
the name and location of the commissioning public agency.
5. SASE. A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return
of slides.
