The well-balanced oil painting Sunset in Bahchisaray (1990) by a
renowned Ukrainian artist G.Varkach sets the viewer in the sedated
mood of beautiful Bahchisaray, a small Ukrainian town now and the
capital of the Crimean Tatar Khanate in the past.
The caves in the background mountains contain tombs dating back to the
8th-9th century. Khan Abdul Sahel Girai built his palace here in 1518
after he moved from Chufut Kale ("Fortress of the Jews"). The town was
destroyed by the Russians in the war of 1736 but later restored. The
famous "Fountain of Tears" was built for Khan Krim Gerei in 1756.
The canvas painting measures 23"x19". The frame is 2 1/2" thick.
