M. Emily Carr, Painter of British Columbia forests and West Coast Indian Villages, was born in
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, 1871 and died there in 1945. Her most mature work is
characterized by the combination of intense personal feeling with a keen observation of the
actual qualities of her subjects. This early watercolour painting of totem poles was executed
shotly after a stay in Paris, and in its broken colour and light tonality shows her familiarity
with the French Impresionists. It also shows Emily Carr more as the external observer than as
the deeply personal interpreter, though even here there is a bigness of feeling, expressing an
awareness in the underlying drama of her theme.
