I was just wondering... how many people have taken classes or had some
kind of traditional training to learn how to draw?
How many are self-taught?

Weird, this is exactly what I was wondering.

Slef-taught isn't quite accurate for me - haphazard is closer to the truth.
I grab at a chance to learn through books. As a kid I loved those Walter
Foster how-to books. I used to watch the Ben Wicks cartoon shows, and draw
along with him. I've also found some good tutorials online.

I watched a documentary on Tom of Finland and learned that he often started
his drawings from photos, and then exaggerated or changed the drawing from
there. I've used that method and liked its results, since it helps me with
issues of proportion and foreshortening.

had training that there is no substitute for practice. Much of that
practice will probably end up being copying... from photos, other
artists' works, models, or whatever.

Could you maybe post some links to those tutorials you mentioned?
Thanks

What I find helpful sn't necessarily what everyone will find helpful. I
recommend doing a google search for "tutorial" plus whatever skill you're
seeking ex: "tutorial +painting"

The ones I found helpful are below.

Drawing, realistic: http://www.portrait-artist.org/
Manga. This site enabled me to make Manga drawings of all my coworkers:
http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/tutorial/tutorial.html
Oil painting (even if I can't follow some of the Russian terms). This site
helped me work my way through a self-portrait in oils:

Well, first, I'm self-taught.

Since this is an old post, I'll reply anyhow. About the age of eight, I
realized that I enjoyed art and continued my practice. Now, I've been a
seasoned Pen & Ink artist for several years. I've studied the workes of Gary
Simmons and Claudia Nice and have excelled their abilities (most of them use
overhead projectors, I don't).

What more are you asking.

Gregg

Are we talking professional artists or hobby artists?

I think most people who draw don't actually 'learn' how to do it, it is just
something they automatically do from child hood.
Whether they do it well is not a necessary criteria at that stage, it is
generally for enjoyment and interest.

If this enjoyment continues into teens , they may decide to just continue as
they are enjoying the process and look to improve their skills by
experience.
Alternatively if they receive the right encouragement from others, take up
further studies and tutoring because they wish to become professional

I imagine many like myself who are non professional andhave neverhad lessons
in drawing, would consider themselves self taught or instinctive.
I read what is around related to drawing techniques and glean what I can to
improve.
