You can best chose an art school by doing a lot of hard thinking about
yourself and your goals. Do you want a 2 year or 4 year school? Big or
small? Where? Comprehensive or focused? What kind of educational
philosophy (loose, structured, traditional, experimental)? The most
important thing in selecting colleges to apply to is to be sure that you
will FIT in those colleges. And this requires that you make decisions
about yourself and your education.
This is hard to do when 17 years old, but it is important to try and to
use your "list" of attributes to make your selection. Your list may
turn out to be wrong in a couple years - in which case, transfer to
another school. But it is far better that YOU drive the selection
process based on what matters to you (expecially what matters personally
and philosophically), than for you to succomb to soomeone else's idea of
the ideal art school. The only ideal art school is teh one that's best
for you, and that is a decision only you can make.
>Does anyone know of any good Art schools not to far from NY?
How far away? There are a lot of art schools scattered up and down the
east coast (from Maine to Florida), but the closest to NYC is
Philadelphia. You can start by looking at http://www.aicad.org - a
consortium of 34 art & design colleges, about half of which are located
in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. Remember: this is a small
consortium and there are surely many more colleges that you should
consider. Try going to educational sites on the Internet (like Yahoo:
education, college, etc.), or getting a book such as Peterson's guide to
visual and performing arts coleges.
