Savannah is a city of astonishing beauty. The lovely architecture, lush
gardens, and tree-lined streets punctuated by stately squares give it a
unique character. You can learn a lot about the city by reading the book,
_Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil_, but you have to see it yourself.

A quarter-century ago, there were very few art students in Savannah. Now
there are SCAD's.

SCAD claims to be the largest art school in the world. I toured the
impressive campus on a recent visit. Officially, it consists of a number of
restored historical buildings scattered around lovely downtown Savannah.
(See <http://www.scad.edu>.) Practically, the campus extends through the
streets and the city's famous squares. Students are everywhere.

Recruiters claim they place graduates in lucrative jobs. Can this be? I've
always heard that there is insufficient money in the arts to support all
the people who want careers as artists.

The tuition is about $16,000 per year. Courses are offered in four
quarters. There are long intersessions. One lasts from Thanksgiving to New
Year's. There's another break for St. Patrick's Day; unfortunately the 1983
parade's "Erin Go Bare" fashion has waned (see
<http://stpats.savannahnow.com/stpats99/history/HSTremembrances.html>).
Perhaps the students will revive it.
