The New Jersey Institute of Ayurveda (NJIA) at the Starseed Center for
Yoga & Wellness offers an independent-study based professional level
training program for aspiring practitioners of Ayurveda, the
estimatedly 6,000 year old healing tradition of the Indian
subcontinent. This distance learning program comprises a series of
tutored, self-study courses in the basic and clinical sciences designed
to afford the highest quality of education and training for aspiring
practitioners.
Areas of instruction in the program include anatomy and physiology;
history and traditions of Ayurveda; pathology; theory and practice;
botanical medicine; physical diagnosis; constitutional analysis;
nutrition and food theory; preventive medicine, psychology and
counselling, ayurvedic jytosh and manipulative therapy, inter alia.
The NJIA curriculum is structured to educate a well-trained and
well-rounded practitioner of this ancient healing art, knowledgable in
both its theoretical and applied facets and proficient in adapting its
time-tested modalities to meet the needs of contemporary health care
consumers.
Within the NJIA program, the first course (and a prerequisite for the
other courses in the program) is the Ayurvedic Foundation-Level
Certification Course, an intensive, broad and deeply detailed

serve two functions: firstly, to provide prospective Ayurvedic
practitioners with a sound basis for further study of the basic and
clinical sciences. Secondly, it is intended for the general public who,
while not planning to continue training, nonetheless desire to take a
larger measure of responsibility in caring for their own health and
that of their families. Upon completion and the successful passage of a
comprehensive final examination, the student is awarded the Certificate
in Ayurvedic Self-Care & Health Maintenance. For further information on
this facet of our program, please click here.
The distinction awarded graduates of the professional program
(involving an estimated 12 to 16 months of study) is the Diploma in
Ayurveda. It is planned to offer both programs via both residential
study as well as on an independent study/distance learning basis.

II. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS AYURVEDA?
Ayurveda, or Ayurvedic medicine, is the world's most ancient system of
scientific medicine and preventive health care. Developed in India over
the course of many thousands of years, Ayurveda (which translates as
"science of life") is a natural approach to creating balance, promoting
healthful life-styles, and strengthening the body's healing abilities
when faced with disease, debility or injury.
WHAT HEALING MODALITIES DOES AYURVEDA USE?
Diet, exercise, and yoga are very frequently used in Ayurveda, as are
herbal and other naturally-derived remedies, massage and manipulation,
psychological counselling and various de-toxification strategies. The
hallmark of the Ayurvedic approach is that the means employed to avert
or treat disease are natural, and when appropriately used, incapable of
causing their user harm, in marked contrast to much of what today
comprises Western medical practice.
WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM'S PURPOSE?
The New Jersey Institute of Ayurveda at the Starseed Center for Yoga
and Wellness has one goal: to provide the best education and training
available in North America today for the next generation of Ayurvedic
practitioners, at reasonable and modest cost, in a fashion designed to
meet the educational, professional and other needs of mature learners
with maximum flexibility, and consonant with the anticipated public
demand and employment markets for Ayurvedic practitioners.
IS THIS PROGRAM APPROVED OR ACCREDITED?
At the present time, no national standard either for the certification
of Ayurvedic practitioners nor for the accreditation of institutions
training such individuals has been elaborated. The two largest United
States based organizations of Ayurvedic practitioners, the National
Ayurvedic Medical Association and the California Association for
Ayurvedic Medicine are currently developing such standards..
