I am interested in finding out what onsite cement block
mixes have been tried to lighten the block weight.
I have found a few articles at this point:
Obviously block strength as certain materials are added
but my interest is in the use as a surrounding cover
perhaps as insulator (temp and sound) with framing on
the inside perhaps.
At any rate I have an article here of a fellow in Quebec
who did a mix of sand, clay, cement, straw, lime and
rockwool to produce a 4 cu ft block at only 5 pounds.
Has anyone else used rockwool?
What about this common faux stone mix used by landscapers
with sand, cement, coloring, perlite, and peat moss?
Why not substitute recycled styrofoam for the perlite
and perhaps rockwool for the peat moss, or scrap pieces
of fiber glass insulation?
Anyone seen mixes using recycled styrofoam and in what
proportion?
I know about commercial products like Faswall, and that
Rastra foam mold system, but am interested in do it
yourself blocks onsite with a balance between strength
and lightweight aspects.
any info appreciated, post or email

As an alternative to conventional blocks, check out Keeva Inc or ABB
Inc. Both make concrete reinforced polystyrene block wall systems;
VERY light compared to CMU, etc. yet with excellent compression
strength and R-value. Keeva has a website, just search for it. I'm
not sure if ABB does.
