Odd question perhaps but what is the minimum range of a hunting
crossbow? I.e. how close can you be to something when firing?

Point blank. That is, you can touch the tip of the arrow to something
and pull the trigger.

Note that, if it is something hard, the crossbow will push back --

Point blank would work. My closest shot so far has been 10 yards.
I once took a buck at about 3 yards with my compound.
