Description: For fans of traditional archery.

Newbie -- Youth Selfbow Advice
As the suggests says, I am new to this group and traditional archery. I bow hunted as a kid with a compound bow. Recently, I have had the desire to take bow hunting back up (traditional style), as my 4-year old boy is really interested in it. Unfortunately, money is tight and I cannot just go out and by a nice bow for each of us. That said, I... more »

THANK YOU - to every one.
I looks like this groups was "dead" for about a year and the out of the blue ot opened up again. Thanks for the notes. I just love to shoot for fun and read the opinions of others that just like to traditionally shoot or make bows and arrows. Tony

PaleoPlaned is damaging natural materials archery
[I guess Tim Baker is famous enough to be quoted here without the need to ask his permission. The following is said by him in the paleoplanet forum] PaleoPlaned is damaging natural materials archery by allowing false information and dogma to seep back into the brew of knowledge. The lack of a civility rule and accuracy rule allows fact and logic refutations to... more »

the mass principle
I think I understand. I think I understand. But what is the mass principle in one sentence?

Do I need to buy better staves?
For about three years I have been making selfbows out of chestnut oak, sugar maple, and birch trees I cut down at home. Nothing special about those trees. In all probability staves from them are mediocre or worse. Out of about 50 bows, two particular bows from an unknown tree (I was too careless to notice but probably just white oak) shoot better than all... more »

brace height
If you increase the brace height, you would lose a small amount of stored energy at first, but you might gain it back at the end of the full draw because you need to pull harder to reach it, as the string is shorter. But as Steve has shown, the gain might not be much, probably not as big as the earlier loss. If you pull the bow only to the original draw... more »

wood selfbow and horn bow
A reasonably fair way to compare the cast of all wood selfbow and horn sinew composite bow is to compare the world distance or speed record of each at the same draw weight and same arrow weight. Is there any way we can find such a record? It would be real nice to find the record for 50# bow and 500 grain arrow.... more »

high gear bows
Recently I have been making almost a dozen bows with the side profile of Khotan or Mollegabot bows. Cf. [link] As they appear to shoot reasonably well, I'm wondering about the usefulness of leverage. Dan Perry says that "Leverage may be the most controversial element of bow limb dynamics, since most bowyers I have... more »

Errata for TBB volume one and two
So far as I can tell several assertions if TBB volume one and two have been corrected in the following volumes. As it is quite plausible that some people buy only the first two volumes, it would be nice to collect those corrections in one place. Possibly to be printed and inserted into the volumes or at least posted online somewhere.... more »
