sapling bows

Sapling bows can be amazing. I have a 1.5" diameter persimmon sapling bow
that is naturally highly crowned but shoots real well at 48" ntn. But I
usually decrown them, at least a little. Other than avoiding the pins and
knots, how do you normally orient the stave? Do you use the natural
reflex as reflex or as deflex?

In other words, you can violate any number of growth rings,
so long as you keep their edge lines as long as possible.

Even if you are not decrowning, you would be
violating growth rings on the side of your bow anyway.
Of course, it's a lot safer if you violate just several rings
and their edge lines start and end in the stiff tips.
Remember to scrape, not to cut, please.

IMHO this is a very wise advice.
I have four selfbows made from a single small diameter oak
that are better than all other bows made from bigger trees.
It appears that the quality of individual tree matters
much more than their species. At least for selfbows.
