As the suggests says, I am new to this group and traditional archery.
I bow hunted as a kid with a compound bow. Recently, I have had the
desire to take bow hunting back up (traditional style), as my 4-year
old boy is really interested in it. Unfortunately, money is tight and
I cannot just go out and by a nice bow for each of us. That said, I
thought it would be a good experience to make an age-appropriate youth
selfbow for my son, and then use this knowledge to make a decent one
for me in the future. Our ultimate goal is to use them for rabbit
hunting together (though my son won't really be shooting anything --
he's only four).

Can any of you give me some info on how to get started on whittling
out a basic little selfbow? What type of wood? Where to get the basic
(affordable) tools. How to tiller (?!), set up the bow, etc...

Any information is greatly appreciated. I am really looking forward to
doing this with my boy and getting out in the desert for some hunting
adventures.

Thanks!

I guess you can start here:
"Building a Bow for Under 20 Bucks"
http://www.dejapong.com/?p=36

You need to get a board
with the straightest grain.
Cf. http://poorfolkbows.com/oak.htm

Good luck.
