Most dedicated marine tanks I see in this country (Australia) have either a
sump hole in the base, or a glass corner over-flow box. FWIW I have never
heard of, nor seen, any damage from these types of tanks. In fact, just
looking at them they are probably structurally more sound than 5 panes of
glass siliconed together, braced or not ;)
I don't know how to plug it if you aren't going to use it, but I would
suggest siliconing a small square of glass over the hole before filling the
tank. Once cured I would then fil the tank to it's maxium water level with
salt water and let it sit for at least a week to see if the patch is going
to hold, or cause some undue stress in the corner. The other option is to
have a glass box siliconed around the hole, which to my mind would
strengthen that corner.
Ultimately though, I'd suggest using a sump system for a marine aquarium
because this is how the tank is designed to be used.
I'm sure more experienced people can give you better advice, but at this
time, I'd say if the tank was manufactured this way, then I'd say it
probably a proven and normal design for a sumped tank ;)
I'm a freshwater only type atm, so I could be talking out of my
ass/ignorance, but I think I'm on the right track?

silicone.
thanks. jay;)
really good filter systems by all acounts, and a worth while
investment... although im sure youve done more research then i have.
good luck with the marine fish man.

im not gonna use a sump system because i want to stick with what i
know.and i only intend to have a FOWLR set up,so a sump system wont be
important.
