I'm new to this newsgroup so apologize if this topic has been discussed
before.

About 4 weeks ago I began setting up a 46 gallon marine aquarium, and for
the past couple of weeks the water has been quite cloudy. The water has a
green color to it and in the past couple of days there is a buildup of brown
algae (?) on the glass. We have a Fluval 404 filter, and a powerhead with
filter, but the cloudiness persists. I checked with the shop where we buy
our supplies from, and while a few people there have heard of green cloudy
water, none have actually seen this condition before.

The water tests fine, and the fish in the aquarium seem to be healthy
enough. But, that cloudy water is unsightly to say the least.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Alan Passmore

Try rec.aquaria.marine.misc I think most of us here are freshwater types.
That said cloudy water is a common phase most freshwater tanks go through.
I assume the same sort of thing happens in salt water tanks.

most recommendations I have heard is that you should not have fish in the tank
yet. But, thats neither here nor there..because you do..and they seem to be
fine....The normal marine route would be filter feeders..(onlive rock, etc.) but
I dont know the goal of this tank....repost on rec.aquaria.marine.misc, or .reef

Green water (algae bloom), is due to too much light, or direct sunlite -
what your seeing are algae spores. It can be filtered out with a diatom
filter, or with micron cartridges, or an ultraviolet sterilizer will kill
the algae spores. You can also add Acurel "E" - if your pet shop doesn't
carry it, some garden shops do - it's used in ponds to kill algae spores
(green water) and will not harm your fish........Frank
