I have a 20 gallon tank that I use a power filter on. I've grown tired of
spending an arm and leg on filter cartridges. Does anyone have any
suggestions for inexpensive alternatives for filtering water? I used to use
an undergravel filter, but got tired of the noise - tank is in bedroom and
I'm a light sleeper. The power filter is quiet enough that it doesn't bother
me.

Sounds like your :
#1 A fucking cheaspass that wants everything in life for free or cheap
#2A fucking lazy ass
#3A very fucking easily irritated person

Perhaps taking up watching grass growing or paint drying is more to
your needs than playing with fish.

<sigh>...another imbecile found Mommy's computer and is frantically typing
away before she catches them and sends them to bed without supper...

Better to be sent to bed without supper than to be force fed your
daddys dick at bedtime like your family traditon dictates.

I know what you mean about the expense of the filter media. I have Goldfish
that require filter cleaning every week. I learned from the lady at my LFS
how to get around it to a great extent. Buy a filter that uses paper or
sponge media. Then get a jar (mason jar works great). Have at least two sets
of filter media. When one gets dirty, rinse it with the hose (do not scrub)
and place it in a jar with a 50% bleach solution for at least 24hrs. Rinse
it thoroughly, and it will be like new! I've been doing this for five years
with the same 3 filter inserts, with no ill effects. Give it a try, but be
sure to rinse well, and allow the filter to dry COMPLETELY. I think you will
be amazed how much money you will save.
