I have a male cat who is 2 years old. On Sunday, I noticed he was
sleeping more than usual so I took him to the vet on Tuesday when
there was no change.
We found out he lost 2 pounds sine March and was dehydrated. So we
ran
all the blood tests, Feline Aids and Leukimia, as well as an Xray. He
had 102 temp and a slightly enlarged kidney but the vet said there
was
nothing in the bloodwork to say he was having a problem. There was no
fluid in the lungs so we left with an Apetite stimulant.
It's Thursday now and he has NO energy. He is eating and drinking but
something is def wrong. He urinated once today but have not seen any
bowel movements.
Anyone had any idea what this sounds like? I have been researching
everything from Kidney failure to Poison to Depression. Please help!
He's my angel!
Thanks!
Take him back to the vet (or a different vet). There is indeed
something wrong with your kitty.
Best,
Bob

Thanks! Well I did take him back to the vet. After speaking with a new
doctor, we discussed the possibilities of bacterial, immuno, or FIP.
His red blood cell count had dropped to 23 so they kept him overnight
to start him on prednisone and also Doxcycline, as well as hydration
and a high mineral food.
I got a call this morning from the vet that his red blood cell count
improved to a 34 overnight and he was released until Tuesday (after
Memorial Day) when I go back for another appointment. After getting
off the IV, he was not eating at the vet but they said it could be
from stress.
I brought him home and he has been eating little bites of food every
so often. I also have been giving him water with an oversized
eyedropper. About 5ML at a time, every hour. I also picked up some
kitten formula and have been giving him about 2.5ML of that every
hour. He likes that alot.
He seems better but still very tired and lethargic. His eyes seem to
be more opened and his overall energy has increased slightly.
I was wondering if anyone knows of the kitten formula is OK? I will be
watching him all night tonight and keeping on him about food and
water. Hopefully we are just looking at a temp anemia and can get him
back to normal soon!!

There should not be a problem with the kitten formula.
Did the vet say anything about the possibility of feline leukemia or
feline distemper (panleukopenia)? Has he been vaccinated against
these two diseases?
Hi Bob - thanks for the continuing discussion!
We tested him for Leukimia and got a negative. I will check on Tuesday
to see if all my animals are vaccinated against it. I know he has
received a distemper shot before.
It's Monday now and he seems to be doing better. I have been
admisitering his medicine, the prednisone and anti-bitoic, and giving
him plenty of water and formula with a dropper. He has started to eat
on his own, jumping up onto the counter where we keep it away from the
dog. He's still tired and not 100% but I can see him getting back to
some of his normal habits.
The vet game me some literature about anemia and hemobartenllaous. I
have two other cats and a dog and none of them seem sick at the
moment. So we'll see. I will uodate tomorrow.

Sounds like your guy is improving. Keep up the good work!

Hey there Bob -
So we went in for another visit today and his blood cell count has
dropped again - from 38 to 32.
The cat seems fine but he is taking prednisone and antibiotic so why
the drop? Any ideas?

Which count? Is this the hematocrit (red cells) or something else?

pcv test, yep red blood cell. Pretty sure hemocrit.
Something seems to be causing the cat to lose red blood cells. This
could be a bug, like a hemobartonella, or slow, chronic bleeding due
to a tumor somewhere. I am assuming that feline leukemia has been
ruled out. Chronic kidney failure can also cause chronic anemia.
If this continues, I would consider taking your kitty to a veterinary
school if there is one close to you.
