I ran across a great site for pictures of animals while looking through
alt.binaries.pictures.animals

It is an archive of pictures of animals. It includes many of the pictures
that have been posted over the years to the newsgroup listed above. It
indicates over 17000 pictures of animals, and offers a search engine to go
through the database and produces an image index of pictures of hits made
on your search. You can then choose to view the actual pictures of interest
to you.

I tried cat and got 1024 hits. Some are not what I wanted (ie domestiCATed
Yak or CATch1, etc), but most were cats including some lynx cats and bobcats
but mainly domesticated cats.

Take a look. I think you will find it interesting. I haven't had time to
completely check the site out completely, but there appears to be some other
interesting features worth exploring.

It is currently at http://bioinfo.kordic.re.kr/animal until July 15, 1999.
The site indicates it will be moving to http://www.best5.net/animal .

Enjoy

I just joined the group. I'm a 28 year old university teacher in France.
I teach English and I'm doing a PhD on detective fiction. I have two
cats (too bad for you I happen to have the cleverest cats on earth!) We
live in the Paris suburbs and therefore our cats cannot go out on their
own because of cars. We take them out with leashes but it is a bit
frustrating for them. Anyway, they spend all time with us and therefore
tend to copy us (I guess, they're copycats!!! :-)) Billy (a huge male
tabby) tries to repeat our call when we call them for food (he's got the
tune right, not the words so far), Tikka (a beautiful female black and
white cat) uses the toilet instead of her sand box. She also gives us
little head butts when we tell her "bisous" ("kiss" in French) or walks
nicely under our noses so that we can kiss her from head to tail when we
say "Tikka on a cobb". Now, who said cats weren't faithful friends? And
they're so clever. We often take them to the market with us and they
remain perched on our shoulders. We are quite a success when we do that,
I can tell you.

Just one thing: Billy hurt his leg badly last summer and had to keep a
cast for over a month. When they took the cast off, his leg was weak nd
he was still favoring him. No physiotherapists for cats, I'm afraid. So
we gave him painkillers and we decided to give him something to chase.
So I bought a laser pointer and made him chase the little red light.
First on the floor, slowly, along the corridor. Then higher and higher
on the wall to make him jump. the vet thought he'd always have a weak
leg. So far (touch wood), he's regained all his strengand walks
normally. Laser pointers are great but be careful not to point them at
your cat's eyes (you'd make him blind)

Hi Delphine,

Tikka uses the toilet? No foolin'? Did you train her to do that? If so,
what technique(s) did you use. I am only familiar with one way, the "raise
the litterbox gradually" method. I'm interested in my female Daphne gaining
this independence, but we haven't the extra toilet needed to accomplish
this.

Please let me know,

Thanks,

C Gearhart

Tikka actually started doing that once when visiting our neighbors. We
have the litter in the bathroom and that's where she looked for it. My
neighbors have no cat so she found no litter box and therefore she peed
straight into the toilet bowl. She started doing that again recently at
our place too (number 2 she still does in her litter or she'd fall in,
I'd say)
We never trained her but I already warned you: my cats are the cleverest
one on earth :-)) (the fact she doesn't flush the toilet is only due to
the fact she's not equipped with opposable thumbs, of course!)

That is cool! I wish mine would learn that.

Reminds me of a funny story.

My roommate's (roomate's?) cat somehow broke her leg and had to get a cast.
Dang thing dragged it around for a month without even seeming to realize it.
It didn't slow her down a bit.

One day I came home and saw my youngest kitty, Bob, playing with something,
when I got closer, I realized it was the cast! Gave me a fright for a
minute, thinking it was a cast with a leg in it (you have to know Bob!).
Sure enough, there is Sophie, fine and dandy walking around like nothing
happened. I figure they decided that Sophie didn't want to go to the vet
again and asked Bob for some help.

Stacey "If you can remove a cast, why can't you do the dishes?"

Delphine,

Do your cats write mystery books, too? We have a couple of felines in the
U.S. who are famous sleuths. <g>

My cats don't write mystery books (but they read when I've got my back
turned since they scatter books all over the floor)
One of them does know how to send e-mails and always writes o the same
person, the detective fiction writer Nevada Barr who is also a cat-lover.

Bienvenue a toi, Delphine!

My cats read, too. When I spread out my newspaper on the floor, they always
know exactly which article I am reading -- then they sit right on top of it,
to remind me that my undivided attention should be on them!

(I think they send e-mail, too -- but to other cats.)
