Research Assistants: Marine Biology

The Coastal Ecosystems Research Foundation, a non-profit research group
based in Port Hardy and Vancouver, BC, is now hiring for the summer. Two
full-time positions are available, June 12th to September 18th, 2000.
Minimum-wage salaries for the two positions are subject to government
funding, so applicants must be BC residents, 18-24, or Canadian
residents planning on returning to school this fall. Both jobs will be
based out of an isolated wilderness camp on the Central Coast, north of
Port Hardy.

RA: Grey Whale Feeding and Subtidal Ecology

Diver required to assist with studies of subtidal ecology on the
southern Central Coast of British Columbia. Underwater duties will
include biodiversity mapping, species identification, zooplankton
sampling, underwater video operation, and current measurement. Surface
duties will include operating a 38' fishboat, observing & recording the
behaviour of grey whales from the cabin roof and from shore stations.
Experience with the identification of coastal BC subtidal species an
asset. Applicants must have open-water SCUBA certification & experience
- preference will be given to those with higher SCUBA qualifications.

RA: Intertidal Ecology

Research Assistant required to assist with a study of the effects of
disturbance on intertidal biodiversity on the southern Central Coast of
British Columbia. Duties will include field mapping, species
identification, development & deployment of devices to measure wave
exposure, GIS analysis, Access database programming. Experience with the
identification of coastal BC intertidal species and measurement of wave
exposure a must. Familiarity with Fisheries & Oceans Canada's
Shorekeepers' protocol an asset. Applicants must also have experience
with sea-kayaks, and have current wilderness first aid certification.
Successful applicants will also hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree
in marine biology or related field.
