If your pictures are 256 colours already, make them into GIFs. If they are
16- or 24- bit pictures, use JPEG instead. The file sizes will be roughly
the same, but the JPEGs will look better because they preserve more of the
original info. Don't bother using JPEG for 256-colour pictures at all (see
the JPEG Image Compression FAQ for the details)
