A lot of people's behavior is explained by their beliefs; and this is the case with people in opposition to spirituality. The followers of Freud and Alfred Adler hold beliefs hostile to spirituality and act accordingly. But the most obnoxious among the anti-spiritual people I've known have been the followers of James Randi.
These people believe that nothing psychic or spiritual can exist and that anyone who claims to the contrary is a lunatic. Pursuant this belief they personally attack anyone involved in any kind of spiritual path or spiritual work.
Now a scientist who disagrees with another person will attack the idea and not the person. But the Randi-ites attack precisely the person. That is because they are of the conviction that anyone reporting spiritual experiences is a lunatic; and their behavior in this regard is very similar to those Muslims and Christians who want to burn the witches out of the false conviction that they serve Satan.
When I referred the Randi prize to an acquaintance who, besides studying psychic phenomena, is also a physics PhD working for Hewlett Packard, he refused it. He said two things: That they are going to set the parameters of the test so tight that nobody could do it; and that they were going to tear into him, which would cost him more emotionally than the chance to win a million dollars. I have since then found out that the Randi test is completely unscientific. They demand a reading at 1 chance in 1,000 to go for the prize, and a reading at 1 chance in 1,000,000 to claim it. Such parameters make it close to impossible to claim the prize, even for an accomplished psychic.
In my case, there are times when my intuitions are right and there are times when they are wrong. By pure statistics, if there were no intuitions at all, they would be right 5% of the time. In my case they are right at a much higher level than that, but very rarely do I run into phenomena that have one in a million chance of happening.
I said rarely. That does not however mean never.
In 1995, I had a beautiful relationship with a woman named Michelle, who had finished Harvard in 3 years and was a poet. In 2000, I called for that to be recapitulated; and surely enough I start corresponding with a woman named Michele, who had finished Caltech in 3 years, who was a poet, and who in 1995 had had a similar relationship with a man from Bulgaria whose last name was similar to my middle name. The chance of this happening is very small; indeed is a statistical miracle. But to get reliable results that can pass a test that demands a one in a million chance of happening is only available to the most advanced in the psychic community - who, being as advanced as they are, are likely to not have a need for a million dollars.
For a long time I've been getting special numbers (known as master numbers) when I look at the clock - numbers such as 11:11 or 2:22. So at one point I ran an experiment in which I set four clocks to different times around the house and recorded the numbers I got every time I looked at the clock. I got 1 in 10 master numbers, where by chance it would be 1 in 60. And it was less than the rate at which I normally get master numbers, since I was conscious of keeping time and looked at the clock more often than I normally would - including deliberately, which I rarely ever do and which by itself would result in a 1 in 60 outcome.
Another statistical miracle situation took place in 2002. At 3 am, my girlfriend got out of bed because she heard in her head her ex-husband. The next morning we decided to test this. So she said in her head, "OK T., if you are talking to me in spirit then call me." In 30 seconds her ex-husband called and told her that he had been talking to her in spirit.
Of course the Randi types will all see this as anecdotal or worse; but neither does anyone else need to see these people as any kind of authority. At best they are a bunch of obnoxious loudmouths, and at worst they are a bunch of abusive creeps. And what I propose is that there needs to be a way for people who have had spiritual experiences to be able to talk about them safely without fearing the ugliness that comes from the Randi-ites, or being attacked by Islamic or Christian fundamentalists, or getting had by one or another conman.
There are any number of useful websites, such as
nvisible.com and
www.psychic-experiences.com, as well as moderated forums such as alt.astrology.moderated where these abusers are disallowed. Among the professional psychics, to screen them from frauds one needs to ask them a question whose answer they can only know through telepathy. There are also any number of people who aren't professional psychics who have spiritual knowledge, and they vary greatly in their levels of knowledge and skill and in their levels of goodwill and integrity. Sometimes they can help and sometimes they can hurt. Do not try to prove it to people who are against it and do not talk about it to people who see it as crazy or as being of the Satan, it is a waste of time and can also be a source of danger. Not all of the psychic experiences you get will be good; sometimes you will run into something hideous and may need to ask someone more advanced. Do not feel like bad psychic experiences are some kind of sin or failure on your part; they happen to most people who have psychic experiences.
Right now the psi community is wrestling with two major lines of attack: Christian fundamentalism and materialist fundamentalism. Of the two, the Christians are more attractive because they at least acknowledge the reality of the experience; however they give wrong explanations and can lead into life-long traps. With the Randi people, like with Freud and Adler people, there is simply nothing to talk about. They are wrong absolutely, and very little stands to be learned from them except human capacity for abusive conduct.
It is of great importance that people get right explanations for their experiences. I propose on the part of professional psychics and astrologers setting industry standards so that only ethical practices are allowed, only those who know what they are doing are in business, and knowledge is freely shared to help everyone get good at the work that they do. If psychologists can do this, then so can astrologers and psychics. The more this is done, the fewer frauds and incompetents in the business and the less the case for people like James Randi.
Finally, it is important to look at things from a historical perspective. Telepathy, spirituality and astrology have been used for thousands of years all around the world. If, as Randi types say, such things are for lunatics, then you are in a good company that includes billions of people, including historically the world's best minds. My advice, gained from experience, regarding the Randi people is this: Ignore them. Your experiences are what they are regardless of their views on the subject, and as a wise person said, Don't feed the trolls.
