A Concerned Father's Confession About Ritalin/1000 Parents of Light!

My son John, ten years old, has been taking Ritalin for the past 16
months. He started out at 5 mgs. per day. That was increased several
times
over the past year. At the beginning of summer, his Doctor wanted to
increase him again, for a total of 25 mgs. per day. That was it for
me! I
had to find something that was not going to be so addictive to his
little
body. He just needed more and more to function like a normal child. It
was
like watching my child get more and more addicted to street drugs! I
have
gone through my own rehab and was NOT going to allow one of my
children to
have to go through that kind of pain and suffering.
I switched John over to a natural alternative. It is amazing to see
the
difference in John! I ran out of the product for about 5 days. WOW! I
lasted about 3 days, and I told John he was going to need to take a
Ritalin. He started crying and begged me to not make him take Ritalin
ever
again. I made a promise to my son, and to myself, that I would never
run
out of these products again.
When John went back to school, the school became very upset with me
and
asked "How could I do such a thing in John's most important years?"
The
schools do not want these children off of Ritalin! It is o.k. for them
to
push Ritalin on them and teach them "just say no to drugs"! This, in
my
opinion, is ridiculous. I never imagined getting such a reaction from
the
school. I wish they would take some time and get educated on the side
effects of Ritalin. I saw them first hand. I also see my child eating,
sleeping, playing and acting just like a normal child now. I could not
say
this when he was on Ritalin. He was losing weight from loss of
appetite.
He had dark circles under his eyes all the time, from loss of sleep.
The
other children actually want to play with John now. When he was on
Ritalin, he was teased because he was "different".
I have set a goal to help at least 1000 parents this year get their
children off of Ritalin. I feel that this is the most important thing
I
can do for these children. It is all about education.

Dear Dana,
I would love to help you in making your goal a reality. But it must
not stop at
1000 parents, but at the 1+ million parents who have their children
(mostly males)
on a form of speed known as Ritalin! The cumulative consumption of
Ritalin has
gone way, way up; even since 1990. In fact, the amount of Ritalin
consumed in
America has almost tripled in just six scant years! According to the
"Textbook
of Pharmacotherapy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders
(1994),
nearly 2 percent of school-age children--more than 600,000 children a
year
--receive stimulant medication for ADD symptoms. Methylphenidate is
not
the only drug used for ADD, but it is the most common. Dexedrine and
Cylert
have been found to confer many of the same benefits as Ritalin and are
effective for some children who do not respond to Ritalin, but they
have
their own problems. Amphetamines have the reputation of being highly
prone to abuse and may be difficult to get in some areas, and Cylert
has
been associated with possible LIVER DAMAGE.
Scientists generally agree that the causes of ADD are complex, with
many contributing environmental factors as well as a strong genetic
component. It is believed by some in the medical profession that ADD
is caused by food additives or allergies, too much sugar in the
children's
diets, or a number of other environmental agents. Also, many parents,
like
yourself Dana, speak of the moral and ethical dilemma of giving a pill
to a
child for behavioral problems. The parents themselves get emotionally
troubled when they notice a quick behavioral change after the child
has
taken the pill. They are justifibably afraid that they could be
permanently
changing the behavior that makes their children unique.
I voice the same concerns as you, Dana, and hope to hear from you
soon!

A very correct decision, considering the circumstances. I'm glad you
have
taken the time and looked and analyzed all sides of this complex
issue.

Excellent. This is a real-life example of turning the tables
on the Profit-Driven Western "Medical-Industrial-Complex"
which treats patients as no more than cattle to the slaughter!
The "guilt" you mention is common these days with Parents
who have to decide whether to change the personality that
makes each and every child unique. To turn him or her into
a "mindless zombie" or "medicated monkey" is usually no solution/
This "final solution" is being rejected by many Parents, such as
yourself; and everyone applauds your difficult decision. You are a
"hero" to me and a inspiration to many!

Again this is the type of tremendous results when Parents
just say "NO" to the pharmaceutical pushers and "YES"
to proper parenting. You both are role-models for millions
of concerned Parents who are in the same boat. You both
set very high moral and ethical standards which many
will surely follow. Leading by example, as both of you have
done, is truly "divinely inspired!" --and amen to that!

This was a great letter, Kristen. Please keep us informed about
your sons progress. It was a real eye-opener and the best
kind of medicine this newsgroup has had in a long time!'

The only thing new is that he seems to be more defiant with me. And,
then once at school, it's like he changes faces.... I am going to be
contacting his developmental specialist to discuss our removal of his
meds, (he does not know yet), and to review my sons' behavior(s). Will
be happy to continue posting any new info, positive and/or negative.
Thank you, Kristen
