A friend has an old (30+ years) motorhome that he wants me to do 60's
style, graffiti style art work on. The existing factory paint is
chalking and chipped a little bit (on the front) and really needs to be
repainted white before I start. My question is what kind of paint to
put down as a base coat? The motorhome has an aluminum exterior. And
of course he doesn't have very much money. So I was thinking about
painting it with a good house paint instead expensive auto paint. It's
so big that it will take a lot of paint. Let me know what you think.

I think it isn't a very good idea to use regular housepaint.First of
all the colour isn't that steady and when you afterwards put a varnish
on, both could react together and ruin your work of art.So I recomment
you spent a bit more money on the paint that lasts much much longer
than a cheap one.I hope this is a help to you.
Sincere greetings,
Sounds like you have a lot of prep work before you get started painting.
That's the key to a great long lasting paint job. That is if that's what
he/she and you want. IMO, it sounds like it might not be worth the time and
effort unless you just want to use it for practice.
The chalking is oxidation and it must be removed or what ever you put on is
going to fall off. If the surface is smooth and not a grain pattern then
that will make things easier. The chipped spots are probably oxidizing as
well and must be treated. The whole thing should be primed and sealed.
I would stay away from the house paint.
I really couldn't recommend a primer or paint unless I knew what type of
paint you plan to use for the graphics and if you plan to clear-coat it.
As you can see this could cost more than the owner is willing to pay. If
he's not to concerned with how long the paint will last, you could always
scrub the thing down with a scotchbrite pad and water then go at it with a
bunch of rattle-can enamels.
Isn't that how they do the railroad car artwork?

I am sorry for butting in but this caught me and I wanted to talk about it a
little.
There are some really talented people out there.
Who are they and do they work at night?
They have to be quick.
A lot of it is just scribbles, but some of it is real artwork.
Once when I was out West, my nephew lives in Snohomish, Wa. He pointed out to me
between there and Everett, a new road interchange was being built. Over night
without being seen, some painting was done up on top of one of the highway piers.
There was no visible way up there and it was 80 to 100 feet at least up the flat
shear face of the concrete pier.
Just babbling, Phil
