Evidently, the voice of decency, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, is
overcoming the cries of the Catholic-bashers. 1.196 billion people
world-wide identify themselves as "Roman Catholic".

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/vatican-statistics-show-catholic-growth/

Vatican City, Mar 12, 2012 / 12:25 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The Catholic
Church added 15 million new faithful in 2010 and the number of priests
continued to steadily increase for the tenth straight year, according to
the latest edition of the pontifical yearbook.

The Catholic population increased from 1.181 billion in 2009 to 1.196
billion in 2010, a growth of 1.3 percent. The percentage of baptized
Catholics worldwide has remained steady at 17.5 percent.

Priests increased from 410,593 to 412,236. There were about 277,000
diocesan priests and 135,227 religious order priests. The growth trend
has continued since the year 2000. The number of clergy increased by
1,695 in Asia and by 765 in Africa. Growth in the Americas and Oceania
was only in the double-digits, while priest numbers fell by 905 in Europe.

The figures come from the 2012 edition of the Annuario Pontifico, known
as the pontifical yearbook, and the “Annuarium Satisticum Ecclesiae.”
These provide a statistical snapshot of the Church.

But they are not, given that 98% of so-called "Catholics" practice BC,
thereby putting themselves outside the Holy Church.

Calling oneself an X does not, in an of itself, make one an X. One must
meet the requirements.

But the Bush apologists hope that you won't remember all that. And they
also have a theory, which I've been hearing more and more - namely,
that President Obama, though not yet in office or even elected, caused the
2008 slump. You see, people were worried in advance about his future
policies, and that's what caused the economy to tank. Seriously.

Doesn't suprise me. In less than fifty years, the Catholic Church over
here in Europe (particularly in German, Austria and Switzerland) will
consist of a few traditionalist groups such as the SSPX or local
Ecclesia Dei communities and the odd conservative parish. The endless
debates about women as 'priests', communion for people who are divorced
and who remarried, about more 'responsibility' for lay people are
damaging the Church in Europe, especially in the German-speaking countries.

Indeed, over 71% of the UK call themselves Christians, yet only about
50% attend church ever and less than 40% attend church regularly.

Catholic churches have lost 25% attendance compared to 19% for
protestant over the last decade.

I think the 20-25% fall is about average for most of the old churches,
some of the new evangelical style churches have short bursts of
increases, but they do not seem to last that long before they
disappear. I think people are finding it harder and harder to accept
people telling what is right and wrong when they are capable of
thinking for themselves.

Our only growing faith appears to be the Muslim faith, they have quite
a large conversion rate from other religions.

I wonder what percentage of them actually consider themselves Catholic, as
opposed to the number of people the RCC *claims* are Catholic. It is
notoriously hard to be excommunicated, and, as the Monty Python song goes,
"You're a Catholic since before you were born!"

No, because all mankind are sinners, including the Pope. Try discussing

Yep, I am still counted as a Catholic even though I have not been one since
back in the early 1970.s. I bet that they even count you as a "practicing
Catholic" even after you die. Once you get on their list as a Catholic you
can't get off it.

Pure, lying bull shit. The Church likes the idea of women being forced
to stay married to abusive husbands. That's the real reason. "God",
being a lie, has nothing to do with it.

The church tax is collected together with your income tax automatically by
the state. You cannot withhold the money as long as you are listed as a
member of a church that is officially registerd with the state. (All
officially recognized religions can apply to have their members taxed like
that, AFAIK only the roman catholic and the protestant church of Germany
actually do so).

If you want to stop paying you have to declare your leaving the church by
filling out a form and paying a fee (!!!) at some local administration
office, then you get some official paper you can show at another local
administration office to have your tax documents changed. From the following
month on you don't pay the tax anymore and are no longer a member
of the church you were born into.

Then too they have no way of knowing who dies, unless they die in the
parish they were baptized in and they cross check records (like that
happens?).

I don't think that's the main reason. The massive fall in the RCC
happened after the 'Council' and all those wonderful 'reforms' (such as
the introduction of the Novus Ordo). In my opinion, that was the first
but most important step for the Church in the process of demolishing
itself....

Another reason is certainly the 1960's zeitgeist. People have not become
independent thinkers and never will be. They rather listen to other
people telling them what is good for them than to the Church because
there are new ideas now and more comfortable messages. Heaven and hell,
sin and salvation, you know all those big topics do not fit into the
'modern world'. The idea that many are called but few are chosen
contradicts the all-inclusive world we live in and the Church is not
even trying to sell those fundamental ideas of its teaching anymore.

Where the Mass used to be the same sacrifice as the sacrifice of Christ
on the cross, it has generally become a 'supper'. The sacrament of
penance has more or less been abolished, at least in my part of the
world. The RCC is being more and more protestantised. The dogma (!)
'extra ecclesiam nulla salus' has been more and more modified since the
'council' and doesn't seem to be part of Catholic doctrine anymore and
people hope to find salvation elsewhere (if they still believe that they
have an immortal soul).

Christianity has become 'unfashionable' and the Church has contributed
to that. The Catholic communities that are indeed attracting young
people and where young men still join seminaries are the traditionalist
groups such as the SSPX.

This is true. 70+ virgins are certainly more attractive than sitting on

2 billion people who , shockingly, are following the 'gospel' of
Rome instead of the real Gospel of Christ ... the only one that is
capable of saving a person from their sins (Faith alone in what Christ
accomplished...and NOT what we can add to it thru deeds, works, doing
sacraments and rituals) . Galatians 1:6-10 is the warning on this.

You just have to be careful about how you define "murder." For example,
torturing people to death because they won't accept the doctrine of the
Trinity isn't "murder", is it?

Yeah, and there are lots of false witnesses on Usenet who allege that
I've said things I've never said. Some of their lies are hard to
combat because they twist things I said rather than simply making up
pure fantasy.

Fulton Oursler, in his semi-fictitious _The Greatest Story Ever Told_,
has a long scene in Jesus's trial by the Sanhedrin, where he has
Joseph of Arimathea cogently explain why three witnesses did NOT
agree. One of them said the above, one of them claimed Jesus said he
was *able* to do that, and the third quoted Jesus as saying, "Destroy
this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

You can find that last bit attributed to Jesus himself in one of the
Gospels, together with the explanation that Jesus was talking about
"the temple of his body."

Not the way the Pope put it. Pope JPII said that the RCC does not have
the authority to ordain women priests. So it would be better to say,
"God didn't give the RCC the dice."

And there is nothing there that rules out God making a miracle in
which it becomes clear that the Church does have the authority after
all.

Personally, I don't see why the RCC doesn't ordain women deacons.
There are deaconesses in the NT.

I've heard it claimed that these were actually like subdeacons, but
hey -- some subdeacons had enormous power in the RCC in the Middle
Ages. Why not have women subdeacons?

The Church is more than making up for the losses in Europe by their growth
in developing countries: Asia and Africa, most notably. Also, China is now
officially off limits to evangelism. What opportunities for the Church when
it finally becomes free and open!

We do just fine with men only. Women do already hold many God-given functions
anyway.

It wasn't always that way. In Romans 16, Paul mentions Junia, who was
"of note among the apostles". Somewhere along the way the misogynists
took over.

Good old Earl, still getting a sore butt from sticking both feet in his
mouth and landing on his ass.

Money lenders were not just useful, they were absolutely essential to
the faith. You could not have pictures on the coins so they traded real
money for fake money.
The RCC uses baskets and skips the fake money part.

It's been postulated that if JC was real, this act was essentially
suicide by cop. It explains why all his followers were not hunted down
and killed.

But Earl denies they had money then:

they don't sell schlock, they don't put Pink Slime in their ground beef,
and their gasoline price is the best in the area.
