Monkey voiceover actor dies at 72

The actor who was the voice behind animal spirit Pigsy in cult Japanese
children's TV show Monkey has died.

Peter Woodthorpe died on Thursday, less than a month after finishing
recording the voice of Pigsy for 13 Monkey episodes not yet broadcast in the
UK.

The 72-year-old also did the voice of Gollum in the 1978 animated film of
Tolkien's book, The Lord of the Rings.

Monkey told the surreal story of the boy priest Tripitaka's quest to
retrieve ancient Buddhist texts.

Monkey for me. Y'know, I can do the whole "In the worlds before Monkey,
primal chaos reigned" preamble from memory. And used to, frequently, before
being asked to stop.

BTW, I'm back near a machine that has sound.

You remind me of Willow, you do.

PS: In my quest to spread the word about TV Cream, the theme to Monkey, sans
narrator: http://tv.cream.org/specialassignments/themes/mmagic.mp3 (305 Kb
MP3 file 56kHz : 16 bit mono). You don't get tv nostalgia better than this.*

*Except for Button Moon:
http://tv.cream.org/specialassignments/themes/button.mp3 (148 Kb MP3 file
mono). I used to follow Mr Spoon. Then he took out a court order.

;)

Ah, yes -- the scarlet tresses, the perky, elfin features, the indefinable,
mystic aura...

... so, how are things in Hobbiton?
