adds up to where they (AmerGen Energy Co., the plant's owner) say it's
better to close it."

http:slashslashwww.philly.comslashmldslashinquirerslash2004slash02slash11slashnewsslasheditorialslash7923626.htm
Two old pals took a duck-hunting trip to Louisiana last month, and now one
of them is in the soup. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was the guest
of Vice President Dick Cheney - and American taxpayers - aboard Air Force
Two.
**Protection For A City's Water - New York Times - 2slash17slash2004
http:slashslashsierraactivist.orgslasharticle.php?sid=41037
New York is among the few American cities enjoying high-quality unfiltered
drinking water, most of it from reservoirs in the Catskill-Delaware
watershed west of the Hudson River. Keeping things that way means protecting
the streams feeding the reservoirs from contamination, which in turn means
restraining commercial and residential development.
**Forget The WMDs ... Let's Ban MTBEs - The Advertiser-Tribune - 2slash17slash2004
http:slashslashwww.advertiser-tribune.comslasheditslashstoryslash0217202004_edtedit0217.asp
A lot of people are wasting a lot of breath complaining about the failure to
find weapons of mass destruction after the U.S. invasion of Iraq. If those
people really want something to wield against George W. Bush, they should be
talking about MTBEs. And they should be joined by Republicans and others who
normally support Bush.
**Mercury Rising - Boston Globe - 2slash17slash2004
http:slashslashsierraactivist.orgslasharticle.php?sid=41001
A new, more accurate measure of mercury levels in newborns has doubled the
Environmental Protection Agency's estimate of how many might have dangerous
amounts of the toxin in their bodies. The new data strengthen the case for
requiring coal-burning power plants and manufacturers to reduce sharply the
amount of mercury in their emissions.

American consumers will burn as much gas as they darn well please, thank
you. Non-renewable resources and greenhouse gases don't seem to influence
their vehicle purchases.

http:slashslashwww.philly.comslashmldslashinquirerslash2004slash02slash14slashnewsslasheditorialslash7951437.htm
A week ago, New Jersey had a transportation crisis. Vital road improvements
were being postponed; construction workers feared layoffs; potholes looked
permanent. Towns and unions were nervous. Now, everybody's happy.

http:slashslashwww.philly.comslashmldslashinquirerslash2004slash02slash12slashnewsslasheditorialslash7932657.htm
For the third time in four years, there's an attempt to rev up a
construction waste recyling business near the park's edge. That means
incoming trucks loaded with construction waste, noise and dust.
**Trail Into The Past - Asbury Park Press - 2slash17slash2004
http:slashslashwww.app.comslashappslashstoryslash0,21625,908286,00.html
Berkeley can provide the final link for cyclists, walkers and history buffs
to enjoy the Crossley Trail, a 26-mile trail into the past. Once the
Township Council approves the township's five-mile stretch, the trail should
become an oasis for people who like to mix exercise, nature and history.
**Windmills Deep-Sixed - Asbury Park Press - 2slash12slash2004
http:slashslashwww.app.comslashappslashstoryslash0,21625,905247,00.html
The proposal to build two 400-foot research towers in the ocean and
eventually windmill farms off Monmouth County is a bad idea -- bad for
fishermen and migratory birds and bad for aesthetics. Fortunately, state
environmental officials know a bad idea when they see one, and they told the
Bald Eagle Power Co. of New York to look elsewhere.

Are the regulators also scrutinizing the "charities" formed by DeLay (I
think) to give funds to Republicans? I hear these "charities" are under
investigation for illegalities. At the very least, their non-profit status
will probably be deleted.

When it comes to saying "no" to development, Home Rule is broken all across
the state. Even in the Pinelands where all the municipalities have certified
to comply with the plan, the "no to development buck" is quite often passed
back to the Pinelands Commission, which has to "call up" the municipal
approval for review and possible denial by a Commission vote. There is often
a conspiracy between the developers "profesionals" and the municipalities
"professionals" in the preliminary meetings to figure out how to get around
the rules to facilitate the best advantage for the development. Quite often
the ever changing politicians and voluntary planning boards do not have a
working knowledge of the detailed rules, and are totally reliant on their
professionals. Given this tendency for local incompetance, Home Rule will
never save the Highlands as a region.

Lisa Coryell misquoted me in the above article. The Trenton Times also
refused to run a correction, so perhaps this will offer a belated
opportunity to correct the mistake.
The quote in question:
"Gange said if the path ran further down Elm Ridge Road and connected to the
park via another tract of farmland, he and his neighbors would be happier. "
A little way down Elm Ridge Road from my farm is a large tract of
undeveloped Mercer County Park land. Parkland not farmland. Got it? Lisa
makes it sound like I want to wreck someone else's farm. What I suggested
was that park land already owned by the county be used for the trail.
I, and my neighbors, expressed preliminary willingness to have the trail run
along Elm Ridge Road at the front of our properties.
This may all be moot since the proposed route appears to have changed.
