Will Obama Select Sen. Reid"s Pal As Next FAA Administrator?

As Bill Sees It (Editorial): British Government Tells Heathrow Victims To
Drop Dead!!! It seems that the British government has a lot in common with
their American counterparts when it comes to dumping round the clock noise
pollution on their own citizens. Despite massive, widespread opposition and
demonstrations, news stories this week tell of the British government's
plans to approve the planned expansion of London's Heathrow Airport in the
next two weeks. Apparently, their version of the FAA, the Department of
Transport, like the FAA, has done everything in its power to minimize this
major environmental impact by portraying it as a "technical change." John
Stewart, chairman of ClearSkies, which represents people living under
Heathrow flight paths, accused the Government of expanding the airport by by
stealth. "The Department for Transport [DfT] has buried the bad news about
new flight paths which will disturb millions of people living in outer
London and the Home Counties," he said. Massive demonstrations are planned
to try to shut down the airport. That's apparently the only thing that will
make the politicians pay attention. No doubt the politicians, airport and
airlines are expecting this and will try to use it to portray the
anti-expansion movement in a bad light. Perhaps they will even use some of
their agents to urge demonstrators to acts of violence. That should be small
potatoes to people who think nothing of sending jets screaming over sleeping
communities at night. Anti airport expansionists must not only rely on
demonstrations and the courts (as the politicians run the court system) but
must get involved with the political system that puts representatives in
office that work to destroy their quality of life.
Bush's Last Week In Office!!! Speaking of politicians who destroy the
quality of life for millions, America soon will disgorge our latest mistake.
The question is will his replacement be any different? If history is any
guideline Obama won't be. Democrats make a big show of being pro-people and
the environment; but when it comes down to backing up their words with deeds
they quickly do a 180 degree turn. A good example of this is Senator "Chuck"
Schumer who as a congressman was always getting his face in the news as a
fighter against airport expansion. However, when he managed to grab a U.S.
Senate seat he suddenly became the promoter of airport expansion in New York
State.
Obama Picks Republican To Be New DOT Secretary!!! Why not? When it comes to
dumping increasing noise on Americans and increasing global warming with
more aviation air pollution there is no difference between democrats and
republicans.
Obama's Choice Of FAA Administrator Will Reveal His REAL Environmental
Stance!!! What's behind the last minute change in "acting" FAA
administrators by Bush? Acting FAA Administrator "Bobby" Sturgell is out and
a new acting administrator (Lynne A. Osmus) is in. Is this a political
payoff of some kind? Strange. Will Obama select Senator Reid's pal (a pilot
named Robert Herbert) as the next FAA administrator and continue to allow 24
hour a day flights over residential areas, especially minority communities?
Is Reid blackmailing Obama to select his former employee (Herbert) for the
FAA job? Does Obama care about the victims of aviation's health damaging
noisepollution now that he has a presidential no-fly zone around him and his
family? If he does he can count on millions of angry critics fighting his
agenda...even non-aviation ones. Obama's FAA administrator choice may be
the one choice that defines his administration.

British Government To Inflict More Noise On British People!!! Hundreds of
thousands of homes will be exposed to more aircraft noise from planned new
flight paths that will allow 60,000 more aircraft a year to use Heathrow's
existing runways. The flight paths will be phased in, the first as early as
next year, and will affect people living up to 30 miles (48km) from the
airport. The Government is expected within the next two weeks to approve
plans for a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow, to open by 2020.
But ministers are also preparing to authorise more intensive use of the
airport's existing runways. The Times has learnt that this expansion will
require a complete redesign of the flight paths of approaching aircraft. The
points at which aircraft turn to enter their final approach, either from the
east or west, will be moved eight miles farther from the airport. Aircraft
will already be as low as 4,000ft (1,200 metres) when they reach these
points. Longer landing paths are needed to accommodate "mixed mode", under
which the two runways are used for both take-offs and landings. At the
moment one runway is used for landings and the other for take-offs, with the
roles switched each day at 3pm to give residents half a day's respite from
the worst noise. Aircraft will take different routes from the holding stacks
to the new turning points, meaning there will be winners and losers in terms
of noise.

Windsor, New York: Letting The Polluter Monitor Their Own Toxic Runoff!!!
STEWART AIRPORT - The state is considering whether to make changes in the
Port Authority's permit covering runoff from stormwater and aircraft
de-icing operations at Stewart International Airport. And this is the time
for the public to give its two cents' worth. The state Department of
Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments between now and Jan.
16. The DEC wants to make sure contaminants don't end up in one of several
bodies of water in and around the airport, including Crestview Lake, for
many years a public swimming hole on the airport property, and tributaries
of Moodna Creek, Silver Stream, Beaver Dam Lake and Beaver Dam Brook. The
Port Authority will be asked to monitor Stewart's runoff for two de-icing
seasons to provide the DEC with enough data to determine what, if any, new
limitations are needed on that operation. Port Authority spokesman Pasquale
DiFulco said all runoff from de-icing operations goes to a sewage treatment
plant; the monitoring is an extra step to make sure nothing harmful is being
diverted to where it shouldn't be going. Written comments must be submitted
by Jan. 16 to Teresa Diehsner, New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation Headquarters, 625 Broadway, Albany, N.Y. 12233, or by e-mail at
dep...@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
Thailand: Airport Protestors Threaten January 17th Protest!!! BANGKOK, Jan 7
(TNA) - Residents affected by noise in the environs of Bangkok's
Suvarnabhumi Airport are threatening to protest there on January 18. Prasert
Boonkaew, a leader of local residents affected by noise pollution, said
pamphlets were distributed in 32 communities nearby the airport to determine
who has not received compensation from the government. They plan to gather
at the fourth floor of the passenger terminal on January 18. Mr. Prasert is
also a member of the tripartite committee set up to resolve the problem. The
pamphlets also said that if the Airports of Thailand (AoT) did not have a
clear answer by the date of the demonstration, their protest might be
protracted. The affected residents are planning to gather on the second and
the fourth Sundays of every month, beginning in February, until the problem
is resolved. Mr. Prasert said that the residents had not accepted the
performance of the tripartite committee due to delays and an unclear
solution in solving the problem and paying compensation. Noting that the
committee could not prevent residents from protesting, he said that the
solution was unclear and no answer was given to residents. (TNA).

Retiring Illinois GOP Rep. Ray LaHood (pictured on the left) has been
nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to be DOT secretary. D. Kirk
Shaffer, FAA's associate administrator for airports, will leave his office
on Jan. 20. Kate Lang, currently Kirk's deputy, will serve as the acting
chief of the airports office. Nick Sabatini, FAA associate administrator for
aviation safety, has retired after nearly 30 years with the agency. Peggy
Gilligan, previously deputy associate administrator for aviation safety, has
been named as his replacement. John Hickey, previously director of aircraft
certification, will serve as Gilligan's deputy.
